The best stories in video games are often ones that have memorable plot twists. These are the ones you never see coming, but on subsequent playthroughs, you can see them coming.

We will cover twenty of our favorite plot twists in a video game. As you can imagine, this list is full of spoilers.

BioShock

Would you kindly stay seated for this incredible gaming plot twist?

Venturing deep into the underwater city of Rapture is a treat. BioShock is an incredible game, and the twist that the player is a puppet for the true villain remains shocking today. 

BioShock Infinite

There’s just something about BioShock and plot twists.

BioShock Infinite trades in the underwater setting for one above the clouds. Protagonist Booker DeWitt is tasked with rescuing Elizabeth from the city of Columbia and the evil Comstock. 

However, we find out that Comstock is Booker DeWitt, reborn after baptism. 

We can’t wait to see what Ken Levine’s team has in store for us next!

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

The follow-up to the PlayStation One‘s Metal Gear Solid was highly anticipated. Fans were excited to see what Solid Snake was up to next.  

In a surprise twist, after playing through the prologue, players instead play as the new character Raiden. This was a controversial move, for sure!

Final Fantasy VII

Aerith is one of the most beloved JRPG characters of all time. She’s also an integral part of one of the best gaming plot twists ever: her death at the hands of Sephiroth.

Part of what makes Final Fantasy VII a beloved game is this stunning and shocking twist. We hope the FFVII remake retains the line and doesn’t alter this iconic moment. 

Spec Ops: The Line

You’ll be forgiven for assuming Spec Ops: The Line is a generic third-person shooter. But, in reality, the game is an excellent lesson in never judging a book by its cover.

The game’s protagonist, Walker, spends his time chasing down the game’s villain, Konrad. Konrad has been performing acts of terror and violence in Dubai. As it turns out, however, Konrad is just a hallucination; Walker has been the one performing these crimes and has to deal with the fallout of his actions. 

Red Dead Redemption 

The story of Rockstar’s open-world western adventure focuses on John Marston. Marston’s tale features thematically him trying to leave behind and provide a good, safe life for his family. That’s something we think he will enjoy by the game’s closing.

However, the FBI betrays and kills him, resulting in the epilogue focusing on his son Jack enacting revenge for his father. 

Braid

The breakout game from designer Jonathan Blow, Braid, is an indie puzzle platformer. It’s a take on the popular gameplay from the Super Mario Bros. franchise.

There’s one key difference with Braid: the twist. You’re not trying to save the princess from her castle. Instead, you’re the stalker villain, and the princess is trying to escape you! 

Portal 

One of the few games widely regarded as perfect, Portal is a first-person puzzle shooter. Throughout the game, you’re promised cake for completing tasks.

However, the game’s AI, GLaDOS, attempts to kill you instead of rewarding you with a Black Forest cake. 

Don’t worry; the game’s end credits feature a cake.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 

One of the most iconic RPGs of all time, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is a classic game from BioWare. In addition to excellent RPG gameplay and storytelling, it features one of gaming’s most significant plot twists. 

After constantly hearing about the lore of Darth Revan, it’s revealed that the player character has been Revan the entire time. It’s a clever twist on a common storytelling trope that’s beautifully executed. 

Metroid

The original Metroid is an NES classic. Its non-linear gameplay has helped spawn the Metroidvania genre of gaming.

One of the biggest twists game at the end of the game. The protagonist, Samus Aran, spends the game in their armor. After the credits, we learn that Samus has been a woman the entire time. This was a big deal back in the day!

The Last of Us

From developer Naughty Dog, The Last of Us is a masterpiece in gameplay and storytelling. As you’d expect from a game like this, the narrative is filled with twists and turns.

The game’s protagonists, Joel and Ellie, spend the game doing everything they can to survive an apocalyptic world. It turns out that Ellie is the key to a vaccine to save humanity, but at the cost of her life. Joel’s face-turn to save Ellie is an emotional plot twist that works because of the strength of their relationship. 

The Last of Us Part II

In a cruel twist of fate, after growing attached to Joel as a protagonist, The Last of Us Part II cruelly murders him in cold blood.

To make matters worse, the game puts us in the shoes of his murderer; having to play the game as Abby is incredibly controversial but a twist that adds to the game’s thematic journey. Ultimately, we feel the game’s story is better off with this twist. 

Silent Hill 2

There’s a reason why Silent Hill 2 is such a beloved game. The PlayStation One classic is one of the greatest games of all time. In addition to the nearly perfect survival gameplay, this plot twist is just icing on the cake. 

One of the most iconic enemies in gaming, Pyramid Head, isn’t real! It’s just a manifestation of James Sunderland’s guilt over the death of his wife. 

Resident Evil

Sometimes, the best plot twists are the ones that are the campiest.

The original Resident Evil is the definition of the word “camp.” But, most importantly, it adds to the game’s charm. This includes the ending’s plot twist: Albert Wesker, who led the STARS team through the mansion, is actually a double agent. 

Don’t worry; even though the game makes us think he died, Wesker seems to keep coming back in subsequent entries. It feels like it’s only a matter of time before we’ll see Wesker again. 

The Walking Dead

2012’s The Walking Dead, developed by Telltale Games, took the gaming world by storm. The interactive narrative adventure was released across five episodes in its first season.

The strength of The Walking Dead is its story, which features one of the biggest plot twists in gaming. 

As the cast of characters dwindles in strength, it turns out that a decision to ransack a stranded car has come back to bite the protagonists. In peak Walking Dead form, one seemingly inconsequential decision had significant consequences and cost major characters their life. 

Heavy Rain

Developer David Cage has a penchant for narrative-driven games like Detroit: Become Human. Heavy Rain, released for the PlayStation 3, is no exception. 

The game’s story focuses on discovering who the Origami Killer is. As it turns out, one of the game’s playable characters, Scott Shelby, has been the Origami Killer the entire time.

It was him all along!

inFamous

Before Sucker Punch Productions worked on Ghost of Tsushima, they were known for their work on the Infamous series. The first game was released in 2009 for the PlayStation 3.

The game’s protagonist, Cole MacGrath, develops superpowers after an accident. From there, he’s tasked with fighting the evil villain Kessler. But, as it turns out, Kessler is Cole from the future, and present-day Cole must decide to embrace evil or become good. 

Call of Duty: Black Ops

While the Call of Duty franchise isn’t always known for storytelling, there are times when it delivers. Black Ops is one of those examples. 

Protagonist Mason spends the game recalling countless adventures and experiences with Viktor Reznov. Unfortunately for Mason, he’s been brainwashed to be a sleeper agent meant to assassinate President John F. Kennedy. As for Viktor, he died in the first mission and was a figment of Mason’s imagination. 

It’s revealed that Reznov tried, and failed, to reverse the brainwashing. Finally, the game ends with footage from Kennedy’s assassination, with Mason visible at Love Field. 

Dead Space

One of the most iconic survival horror games of all time, Dead Space, comes from Electronic Arts. It was released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2008.

The game’s protagonist, Isaac Clarke, navigates the mining vessel Ishimura and fights off the enemy Necromorphs that have taken the ship over. One of the crew members, Nicole, is Clarke’s girlfriend.

It appears that Isaac can save Nicole, but it turns out that she’s been a hallucination the entire time. Instead, the enemy alien monolith preyed on Clarke’s mind to do its bidding. 

Halo: Combat Evolved

We wrap up our list of the best gaming plot twists with one of the most iconic FPS franchises ever: Halo. 

Protagonist Master Chief spends the gaming battling the enemy alien faction known as the Covenant. However, we eventually learn that the Covenant isn’t the real enemy here. Instead, a parasitic race of aliens known as the Flood is the actual threat to the galaxy.

Furthermore, it turns out that the titular Halo device was created with one sole purpose: to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy to force the Flood into starvation.

There are many games that are full of nostalgia and deserve a revival. This list compiles the top list of franchises that we would love to see come back to life.

Klonoa

Klonoa did luckily get a remaster of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa: Lunatea’s Veil, making both games way more accessible than they used to be. However, it hasn’t received a new game in the franchise for a long time.

Seeing Klonoa up to his old antics and taking him on a brand new journey would be wonderful. 

Gex

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen our comedic lizard friend. The last game was released in 1999, so fans have been waiting an awfully long time. While there are plans to port all three games to modern consoles, seeing Gex on a new adventure would be great.

Whether he is charming ladies and trying to get cozy with the Bond-like women, or he’s tail-swiping enemies and jumping on controllers, it’d be great to see Gex again.

Spyro the Dragon

While Spyro The Dragon’s original trilogy was remastered, it’d be nice to see the rambunctious purple dragon on a brand-new adventure. We haven’t seen anything of Spyro since 2018, when the remasters came out.

It’d be cool to see what he would have to collect in a new game. Whether it’s eggs, dragonflies, or saving more dragons, I’m here for a revival of Spyro.

Dino Crisis

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen anything of the Dino Crisis franchise. It was a short-lived adventure, but we loved every second of it. The last game in the franchise was in 2003, so Dino Crisis is well overdue for a revival.

With updated graphics and better sound effects, Dino Crisis could be even more terrifying than it already was! It’d be the perfect survival game if it were to be revived.

Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve was such a fantastic survival horror when it came out. It was well-loved and even had a sequel. However, it quickly died off, and there hasn’t been any revival since. 

It’s still a beloved franchise, and it’d be great to see what a reboot of Parasite Eve could look like with new technology.

Ape Escape

Luckily, the original Ape Escape games are still widely accessible. With them being available through the Nintendo Switch emulator, as well as being able to purchase physical copies of the game.

Getting a brand new Ape Escape and reviving a beloved franchise like this one would be amazing. It’s a long shot, but one can dream, right?

Banjo-Kazooie

The last game in the Banjo-Kazooie franchise was in 2008. That was far too long ago, and it’d be wonderful to see this loved duo go on another adventure. At least we saw Banjo the Bear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Still, we need to see this iconic duo go on a brand new adventure where they thwart the powers of evil once more! 

Jak and Daxter

Jak and Daxter are another beloved duo that we haven’t seen in a very long time. The series was ported to PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3, but we haven’t seen a new iteration in the franchise since 2017.

While I doubt we will see Jak and Daxter again, I can at least hold on to hope. After all, a movie about Jak and Daxter is supposedly in the works, so maybe that will be enough to revive the franchise.

Toejam and Earl

Toejam and Earl hold so much nostalgia for me. They are full of funk and are hilarious characters. You can’t not love them. They both have such big personalities, and the gameplay makes it that much more riveting. 

We have seen this iconic duo more recently than other games on this list. The last game in the franchise came out in 2019, but it’d be great to see them again and get some funk in.

StarCraft

While StarCraft is still a live service game, and you can play it whenever you want, it’d be fascinating to see what Blizzard Entertainment could do with reviving this franchise. Technically, the franchise isn’t dead. 

The original StarCraft had a remaster come out in 2017, but it’d be nice to add more story and depth to the franchise and revive it fully with a new game.

Sly Cooper

Sly Cooper was such a fun franchise, as you got to play as an anthropomorphic raccoon and go on several stealth missions. You also had some pretty neat companions along the way, such as Bentley, the turtle. 

The last game in the Sly Cooper franchise came out in 2013. Sly Cooper is well overdue for a revival, and it’d be great to see what stealth adventures he would get up to with a refreshed look and feel.

 L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire was such a fun game. While it isn’t technically a series, it definitely had the potential to have more than one game. Even if it was a remake, L.A. Noire deserved better than it got. 

Sometimes, the characters’ facial expressions made it incredibly difficult to tell if they were telling the truth. With some updated graphics, it’d make being a detective much easier. I’d love to see L.A. Noire get a revival!

Max Payne

When it comes to third-person shooters, Max Payne is one of the best. It features a neo-noir style and comes with mystery and intrigue as you seek revenge for your wife and child. 

While a remake was said to be in progress in 2022, we have yet to see any proof of that happening. If it were canceled, we would love to see Max Payne’s revival.

Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger, unfortunately, did not get the remaster treatment. Instead, we saw Chrono Cross get a remaster with the Radical Dreamers edition of the game. Seeing it get more love is fantastic, but I would like to see Chrono Trigger get the same treatment.

Whether it’s a new game entirely in the same universe as Chrono Trigger or even just a high-definition remaster, it’d be great to see Chrono Trigger get a revival.

Conker’s Bad Fur Day

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the comedic squirrel Conker. It has received a couple of rereleases, the latest being in 2015. However, seeing this crude-humored squirrel and his friends in a brand-new game would be great.

Whether it was solving puzzles, defeating bosses, or racing, it’s time to give Conker more love. 

The Legend of Dragoon

The Legend of Dragoon was such a phenomenal game that it deserves more love and recognition today. While there was going to be a sequel, it was eventually canceled during pre-development. 

It’s unlikely that we will see this high fantasy world come back to life, but we can at least hope that one day, it gets a remaster or a revival of sorts.

Command and Conquer

Command and Conquer is one of the best RTS games out there. It’s had plenty of spin-offs, additions to the franchise, and even a remaster. While we have had a remaster and had the joy of getting the ultimate collection on Steam this year, it’d be awesome to see a brand-new game added to the franchise.

Sure, you could say Command and Conquer isn’t a dead franchise, but it could do with a little bit of a revival with a brand-new game.

The Simpsons Hit & Run

We’ve been asking for this for years, but it’s unlikely that we will ever see The Simpsons Hit & Run get a sequel or even a remaster. It was one of the best PlayStation 2 games ever released, even if you weren’t a fan of The Simpsons!

Sadly, the company that developed The Simpsons Hit & Run no longer has the license for The Simpsons, and we’re unsure if they’ll ever work on purchasing it again to make the game. However, the fans would love to see a revival of this game!

Bully

Bully was such a fantastic game, and it remains pretty memorable today. While it received a remaster in 2008, it did not sit well with critics. It would be tricky to make a new game in the same universe, as the characters would assuredly be way older by now.

However, it could be possible to have the original characters up to their same antics in a workplace or something instead. Either way, it’d be great to see Bully get a revival.

Earthbound

Earthbound, also known as Mother in Japan, is one of the greatest games released by Nintendo. It features the story of Ness and his party of friends, including Paula, Jeff and Poo. It has a brilliant, heartfelt story, but the Mother franchise overall is pretty inaccessible, with Mother 3 being a Japan exclusive.

Considering it’s one of the best video games of all time, it’d be great to see Earthbound get a remaster or even give the franchise a new revival with new characters and a new world to explore.

Golden Sun

Golden Sun is such an iconic fantasy franchise. While we did see the latest Golden Sun game in 2010, it’s been 14 years, and it’d be great to see something new added to the series. The abilities the characters get to use are so much fun, and it’d be great to see the reveal of Alchemy in updated graphics. 

It’s unlikely that we’ll see Golden Sun get another iteration in the franchise, but we can at least dream of it getting a revival at some point.

Kid Icarus

Kid Icarus is another great franchise created by Nintendo but seems to have been forgotten, much to my dismay. While Pit is a strong feature across Super Smash Bros games, the last game was created in 2010 for the 3DS. 

It’s been so long since the last game was announced at E3! It’d be great to see Kid Icarus get a revival, as it was such a great franchise.

Earthworm Jim

What’s not to love about Earthworm Jim? It’s a worm in a giant robotic suit while trying to save the world against the forces of evil!

Earthworm Jim revivals have been in talks for a very long time. Since 2008, an Earthworm Jim game has supposedly been in development, but nothing has been heard of since. We will unlikely see that game come to fruition, although it’d be great to experience this franchise’s revival.

Lost Odyssey

Lost Odyssey is a hidden gem of a game released in 2007 in Japan and 2008 globally. While there was only ever one game, it has so much potential to have more games in this franchise. 

The combat was fantastic, and it had an amazing soundtrack composed by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu. It’d be great to see Lost Odyssey revived and given a new lease on life. Whether that would be a remaster or a brand-new game added to the franchise, Lost Odyssey’s legacy needs to live on.

Portal

Portal is well-loved by many people across the globe. It’s one of the most unique puzzlers out there and has some great commentary from GLaDOS, who loves to torment you as you go along.

While we did get to see Portal 2 come out, we got to have more physics based fun. Portal’s modding community is pretty extensive, but it’d be great to see a Portal 3 or something similar. 

There are plenty more games out there that deserve to get a revival. Luckily, we are seeing more and more series come back to life. For example, we are seeing Silent Hill 2 get a fresh coat of paint. There’s always hope for these franchises, too.

Over the years, we’ve seen some truly incredible games come out. However, as technology has advanced, a lot of these games are now dated or not accessible anymore.

This list compiles the games we would want to be remastered.

Bully

Bully is a fantastic game released by Rockstar, and on release, it was seen as a little bit controversial. Once people got over the game’s shock factor, they realized that this game is a bit of a masterpiece.

While the game is still available on PlayStation 4, Android, and iPhone, I would like to see it with modernized graphics. The gameplay was silly fun, as you could choose how and when you bullied people, and I would love to see that in high definition so that I can appreciate just how goofy this game is.

Red Dead Redemption

Some may say that Red Dead Redemption has received a remaster, but the truth is that it’s only a 60 FPS port of the game. It’s not currently worth its hefty price tag, and I would love to see this game get a proper HD port.

When it comes to Western games, Red Dead Redemption is one of the best. You get to live your best life as a cowboy, wrangle horses, and collect bounties. What’s not to love? While we have all of this and more in Red Dead Redemption 2, I’d love to experience a higher quality experience of the original that brought us here.

If there’s one game Rockstar needs to properly remaster, it’s this one and not the sequel.

Dino Crisis

Dino Crisis is an absolutely fantastic game, but it’s highly inaccessible. Should you find yourself with a PlayStation or PlayStation 2, you may be able to get hold of this game. However, it’s usually incredibly expensive on the market.

Instead, I would like to see this game revitalized and given a new lease of life. With high-definition graphics, it’ll make the dinosaurs that much scarier and fighting for your life much more intense.

Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve is a beautiful and iconic survival horror game released on PlayStation 1. However, trying to obtain this game is incredibly difficult, and it’s one of the most expensive PlayStation 1 games you can buy. 

This game had some of the most unique monsters and combat systems and was considered to be highly experimental. Despite that, it became a game loved by many, including me. It was very similar to the classic Resident Evil experience but was much more in-depth and had a bigger and better weapon system. Getting to experience that in HD would be the best!

Warcraft III

Okay, so technically, Warcraft III has received a remaster, as indicated by the above image. However, it wasn’t received well at all. The fans who played it were deeply unhappy with it due to poor design choices, such as a bulky UI that took up too much space unnecessarily. 

Luckily, Blizzard recognized their faults and refunded any player who didn’t enjoy the experience. Personally, I’d like to give them a second chance to retry creating Warcraft III, as it has so much potential to be a great remaster today.

Heroes of the Storm

While this may be a bit of a hot take, Heroes of the Storm is one of my all-time favorite MOBAs. The market has slimmed down considerably, but Heroes of the Storm has huge potential. I would still play it today if the servers weren’t so volatile. However, the queue times are too long, and matches are buggy.

It would be great to see this game get a bit of a spruce up and have some working servers. While they were releasing patch notes recently, it didn’t seem to be anything more than that. We can dream, though, right?

Bloodborne

It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that Bloodborne is on this list. At this point, we’d like to see any form of an update. Even if it was a 60 FPS patch or a port to PC, please give us something!

It would be fantastic to see it in the updated graphics and animation style that FromSoftware now uses. Considering how popular this game is, Bloodborne would be one of the most perfect games to remaster.

Clock Tower

Clock Tower is another phenomenal survival horror game released for PlayStation, and it is also playable on PlayStation 2. However, this is another game that is notoriously difficult to get hold of, and you may be paying a huge chunk of money to get your hands on it.

With updated graphics and refined audio, Clock Tower would be a fantastic horror that would make many people uncomfortable. You have to rely on stealth and hiding in places to ensure your survival while tackling really difficult puzzles.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos has such a special place in my heart. It’s a game that I grew up playing, and I still love it to this day. However, it is absolutely worth a remaster. Getting to hear Croc say “kersplat” in a high-definition game would be an instant serotonin booster.

When it comes to platformers, Croc is one of the more unique ones out there, and a remaster would be the perfect way to put this game back into the limelight as it deserves.

Final Fantasy 9

It’s been rumored for a long time now that a Final Fantasy 9 remake is coming. Getting to experience the tale of Final Fantasy 9 with remastered graphics and high-definition audio would be a dream come true. Leakers have reported that FF9 is supposedly in the works, but we’ll wait for Square Enix to tell us themselves.

When it comes to Final Fantasy, the ninth iteration is one of the best. There are some lovable characters and some downright hateable ones. Seeing the cutscenes get a revamp and a new lease of life with improved graphics would make all the difference to this game.

Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas is one of the most loved entries in the Fallout franchise. Set in Vegas, where the town is more of an enemy-ridden desert, this game stands out from the crowd and stands out for a good reason. It has one of the best stories in the franchise, with feuding factions, some really interesting characters, and, of course, cannibalism.

Seeing Fallout: New Vegas with fewer bugs and high-fidelity graphics would be a game changer. Fallout: New Vegas is already loved by thousands worldwide, but giving it a remaster would bring it a new lease of life.

Tomb Raider: Legend

Honestly, it’d be great to see the entire Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld trilogy remastered. That trilogy alone is one of the best games in the franchise, but they aren’t as accessible anymore. While they are available on Steam, you’ll have a hard time running them. Good luck trying to play the game with a controller!

Even if they gave it a similar treatment to Tomb Raider 1-3 and just gave the graphics a bit of spruce along with the UI, it would be a perfect remaster. The games speak for themselves in quality; it doesn’t need much more than a minor touch-up.

Twisted Metal

Twisted Metal is one of the most unique games I’ve ever experienced from the PlayStation 1 era. You get to pick one of twelve vehicles and create some havoc. The single-player mode is surprisingly fun, but multiplayer is where it’s truly at. 

Because of the multiplayer capabilities and the modern era of online gaming, Twisted Metal would make for a perfect remaster.

Theme Hospital

While we have a similar game in Two Point Hospital, it would be fantastic to see the original Theme Hospital remastered. It’s highly nostalgic, and the game is surprisingly relaxing for the vast majority. However, the bigger the hospital, the more stressful it is!

The game would be even better with some updated graphics and maybe some new added features like new illnesses or new difficulties.

Tokyo Jungle

Tokyo Jungle is such a hidden gem that has been forgotten by many. This game was released for PlayStation 3 and was considered to be a relatively good game. However, with the PlayStation store now shut down on PS3, it’s a lot harder to obtain this game. 

The gameplay was a lot of fun and could be very chaotic as you have to build up your own herd of animals and try to get them to all work together. This alone was challenging but could be so much fun with a bit of a revamp.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Ocarina of Time is one of the best Zelda games out there, and I would love to see it get the special treatment. It has one of the best stories and a follow-up with Majora’s Mask, another fantastic Zelda game to jump into.

The puzzles in this game are fun but tricky, the characters are lovable, and the world feels expansive. With a touch-up on the graphics and making the game feel a little less clunky, it would be a dream to play.

Sure, we have the 3DS version of the game, but why don’t we have one for Nintendo Switch?

Jak and Daxter

Jak and Daxter is an incredibly popular game that is loved by many. It’s a great franchise with everything you could want in a game: platforming, puzzles, racing, and more. The games were combined into an available collection, but it doesn’t quite do the job that a remaster does. 

Being able to do the puzzles and racing levels with high-definition graphics and a new lease of life for Jak and Daxter would make it a fantastic remastered game.

Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko

While this may be controversial, this was one of my favorite games in the Gex franchise. It feels much more in-depth than some of the other entries in the franchise, and the cheesy comedy made the game much better.

Gex isn’t the most loved franchise when it comes to PlayStation 1 games, but it would be a dream to see this lizard in high-definition graphics so that he can tail-swipe his way to victory.

Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation

We’ve seen the first three games in the franchise get a remaster; now it’d be a fantastic time to see the fourth one get remastered, too. Having the final two games in the original series remastered would be a dream, especially Tomb Raider 4.

Tomb Raider 4 is the longest game in the franchise and has the most levels. It’d be great to explore Egypt and get to know more about Lara’s story with high-definition graphics and an update to the UI. Also, it’d be nice for the game to be a bit more accessible and actually run on PC.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Everyone has been asking for it for a long time, including me! Even if it were just a port over to Nintendo Switch, I’d be more than happy. However, seeing Midna and Link with new and improved graphics would make the game even better. Twilight Princess’s art style is crucial to the experience and is one of the darker games in the franchise.

With the game last being ported to Wii U, it’s still fairly inaccessible. We hope to see The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess get a remaster soon. There are constant whispers of the future of Twilight Princess, but Nintendo has remained silent on the matter. 

Pokemon Crystal, Gold, Silver

While we’ve seen a couple of the Pokemon games get remasters or some form of a sequel, it’d be great to see one of the better Pokemon games get a remaster. 

Whether the remaster came as a game like the Legends series or if it were similar to Let’s Go, those would be ideal. Anything that isn’t similar to Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl would be great.

Silent Hill 3

Silent Hill 2 is finally being remade, and next, I would love to see Silent Hill 3 be remade as well. Those two games are some of the absolute best in the franchise, with Heather Mason being a legendary protagonist.

Being able to experience the haunting atmosphere of Silent Hill 3 and all of the enemies in realistic graphics and with a less clunky movement system would be a game changer. Silent Hill 3 deserves a remaster, for sure.

Earthbound

Earthbound is such a fascinating game, and it’s only become available on the Nintendo Switch Online emulator in recent years. While we would love to have Mother 3 added to the Nintendo Switch emulator, that’s something for another time.

Earthbound would look great with some updated graphics and new audio. The game is so special and influenced the iconic Undertale and Deltarune that it’d be a shame for people not to experience it.

Trying to curate a list of the best PS2 games is incredibly difficult. Sony’s PlayStation 2 is the best-selling console of all time. Trying to cut a list of 50 of the best PlayStation 2 games is a challenge, never mind 30. Don’t worry, dear reader, because we’re up for that challenge. Using a combination of personal opinion, critical acclaim, and fan sentiment, we’re presenting our list of the 30 best PS2 games ever made. Some difficult cults will be made; there were a lot of really good sports games we had to say no to. Some beloved timeless classics were left off. I’m sure there’s something else we may have missed along the way, but hey, there are a lot of good games on the PlayStation 2.  

Grand Theft Auto III

We begin our list of the best PlayStation 2 games with Rockstar’s breakout title. Bringing Grand Theft Auto to an open 3D world forever changes the franchise and all gaming. While Grand Theft Auto III lacks the cinematic presentation of its successors, the revolutionary gameplay foundation is still present. Claude acting as a silent protagonist works well. This allows the game’s focus to be not on the characters but also on the gameplay and its setting. Liberty City is a world filled with potential. It parallels its real-life influences so well despite the limits of the PS2 hardware. The atmosphere, mood, themes, and story in GTA III elevate the gameplay and help the game transcend to further greatness.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

It turns out that taking an all-time classic and enhancing the style and presentation is a great way to make it one of the best PS2 games ever. Oozing personality is easy to do when you’re set in 1986 Miami Vice City. Backing that up with a vibrant city and an impressive voice cast is the icing on the cake. Ray Liotta helps bring Tommy Vercetti alive as more than a mute everyman like GTA III’s Claude. Vice City expands on Grand Theft Auto III in every imaginable way. It’s more than a spin-off of an “expansion.” This is a full-fledged experience that solidifies Grand Theft Auto as one of the best franchises in gaming.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Note: Above screenshot is from the game’s Definitive Edition. Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City are landmark achievements in video game history. San Andreas makes them look antiquated in the blink of an eye. Are some of the RPG features within San Andreas cumbersome? Possible, but that’s all personal opinion and preference. There’s no denying that San Andreas accomplishes more than almost any other game of its era. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a major accomplishment. It boasts a gigantic world featuring three cities. An impressive voice cast helps take an already great narrative to even bigger heights. The game is based on the late 80s and early 90s Los Angeles environment. This gives the content and themes much-needed depth and weight. As great as its predecessors are, San Andreas is something more due to the maturity of its themes.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is a beloved PlayStation 1 classic. The franchise’s debut on the PlayStation 2 makes the game nearly obsolete. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 is just that good. Advancing to the PS2 hardware opens up a new world of possibilities. Level design is a notch above the original releases. Each stage combines a great mixture of gameplay options and over-the-top scenery. Grinding rails through an airport or pulling off tricks in suburbia is an absolute blast. The game’s soundtrack is just as eager to step up to the plate. The combination of punk and hip hop delivers an unforgettable experience. It matches the game’s atmosphere perfectly; Neversoft and Activision expand the Tony Hawk franchise in the best possible way.

Tony Hawk’s Underground

After four “traditional” releases in the Pro Skater franchise, Tony Hawk’s Underground takes the series in an entirely new direction. The game world opens up (literally), offering the best of two worlds: open-world adventure and skateboarding. Enhancing a game with incredibly sound fundamentals and a  pick-up-and-play mentality with a solid story and characters is a winning formula. Neversoft isn’t afraid to try something new while not overly tweaking the franchise’s foundation. By keeping the game’s heart intact while expanding its soul, Tony Hawk’s Underground gives people something new yet familiar. It’s a rare example of a developer swinging for the fences and connecting. This makes it an easy inclusion on our list of the best PS2 games.

Resident Evil 4

Next up on our list of the best PlayStation 2 games is a title that many thought would never arrive on Sony’s console. Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 was once exclusive to the Nintendo GameCube. In addition, many thought the PS2 would not be capable of running the game, period. Admittedly, there is a bit of a technical downgrade on the PlayStation 2, but this is still the genuine Resident Evil 4 experience. This is the game that redefined the survival horror experience. It raised the bar for what a video game could be. Parts of the game haven’t aged too well, but it doesn’t diminish its accomplishments.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

The most controversial aspect of Metal Gear Solid 2 is the story. People felt bait and switched regarding the game’s playable character. After starting with Solid Snake, it becomes the Raiden show. If you can get over that, be prepared for one of the best PS2 games of all time. Bringing the franchise to the PlayStation 2 opens up new avenues in terms of gameplay and storytelling. The advancement in visuals and technology doesn’t seem like much at first. The more you dive into the game and get lost in the immersion, the more impressed you come away. Sons of Liberty doesn’t get the same acclaim as other games in the franchise, which is a shame. It’s a fantastic game and an essential part of our list.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

After Sons of Liberty took place in the future, Snake Eater takes things back to the past. Way back. Metal Gear Solid 3 is the first chronological release in the franchise. It tells the origins story of Big Boss, known as Naked Snake in MGS3. Despite the game once again not featuring Solid Snake, Big Boss’ similarities were enough to please fans that were turned off by Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2. Gameplay wise, Snake Eater returns the franchise to an experience more akin to Metal Gear Solid. The game plays out like a cinematic experience, filled with beautifully directed and designed cutscenes. Stealth sequences, backed by the new camouflage feature, are as tense and enjoyable as ever. For many, this is the high point in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, making it an easy inclusion on our list of the best PlayStation 2 games.

Twisted Metal Black

After three successful releases on the PlayStation 1, the Twisted Metal franchise decided to reboot on PS2. The decision worked wonders; Twisted Metal Black is the best game the franchise has ever seen. Vehicular combat and demolition derby-style gameplay are as enjoyable as ever. Where Twisted Metal Black truly shines is the game’s depth and presentation. Each character’s story is well thought up and delightedly dark. The game isn’t afraid to shy away from what it’s about: chaos, mayhem, and destruction. It’s all wrapped up in a beautiful package. From the second you boot the game up, everything feels different. The game feels more important than its past iterations. No longer is this a fun time destroying each other’s vehicle. This is the big leagues; this is serious.

Devil May Cry

2001’s Devil May Cry is the start of one of Capcom’s most successful franchises. It serves as inspiration for not just subsequent releases in the series but also helped kickstart the prolific career of Hideki Kamiya. Devil May Cry oozes style and personality. The intense combat and demonic action are backed up by a slick soundtrack and a satisfying challenge. Arcade-style combos and points help drive the point home: this game is a lot of fun. Age hasn’t necessarily been kind to the game’s visuals, but they are impressive for their time. The gothic-inspired visual design is felt throughout, resulting in an amazing aesthetic. Other games have come along and performed better in the hack-n-slash genre. They should make sure they thank Devil May Cry for paving the way.

God of War

Speaking of action hack-n-slash games, let’s talk about why God of War is one of the best PS2 games. Compared to Devil May Cry, God of War can balance more of the action-adventure side of the genre. Combining intense action with puzzle solving and exploration results in a well-paced gameplay experience. What may be most impressive about God of War is that it gave the PlayStation 2 a game that goes toe-to-toe visually with other Xbox and GameCube titles. The PS2’s hardware is generally regarded as underpowered compared to its contemporaries. With God of War, Sony proves their second console can still create impressive-looking games.

God of War II

Two years after the debut of Kratos, God of War II ups the ante. The result is easily one of the best PS2 games of all time. Santa Monica Studio focuses on perfecting the formula, and I mean perfect. Everything is a wonderful refinement over the original. The graphics, which were some of the best the PS2 has ever seen, are even better in the sequel. The gameplay, story, and character development are polished to an immaculate shine. Other games of the era can use their strengths to outweigh their weaknesses. That’s not the case with God of War II: it has no such flaws.

Shadow of the Colossus

Few games can deliver a cinematic and immersive experience like Shadow of the Colossus. Its release on the PS2 is a technological achievement. Few games can showcase the size and scope of its world and its inhabitants like Shadow of the Colossus. Whether you’re playing it on PS4 or PS2, this is a game you will never forget.

Katamari Damacy

There is no way to truly explain what Katamari Damacy actually is. The best I can do is explain my train of thought during my first playthrough.

• What in the world am I doing?
• What on Earth is that music?
• Why is he talking like that?
• Why am I humming the song?
• Oh my goodness, this is way too much fun.

Katamari Damacy is something that is best experienced. It’s a wacky, crazy, over-the-top term–I literally just asked my wife what genre this game is, and she gave me a blank look. Part platformer, part puzzle, part drug trip, there is nothing out there like Katamari Damacy. That’s why it’s still one of the best PlayStation 2 games.

Silent Hill 2

The PlayStation One saw the birth and growth of the survival horror franchise. It also saw the debut of the Silent Hill franchise, which is a good game. Having said that, it pales in comparison to the beauty of Silent Hill 2. Team Silent crafts one of the most atmospheric, immersive, and fascinating environments to ever exist in a video game. The town of Silent Hill, Maine, is the gold standard for any video game locale. On the gameplay front, Silent Hill 2 equally delivers. The focus on horror is present throughout. This isn’t an action-packed affair but a slow, methodical descent into madness. The game’s pacing suits it well, helping to make the scariest moments that much better.

Final Fantasy X

Note: Screenshot is from the remasterd version. After a string of successful PlayStation One releases, Final Fantasy debuts on the PS2 with Final Fantasy X. Many view it as one of the best games in the franchise. Others see FFX as a Blitzball game containing a Final Fantasy game. Tidus is who he is, but it’s hard to deny the innovations in terms of character development made by the game. Square Enix can also avoid many pitfalls and cliches in the JRPG genre. Final Fantasy X is more than just a visual upgrade for the franchise. The overhauled battle system and character-building systems are both a huge success. Final Fantasy X was such a hit that the game even received a direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, in 2003.

Kingdom Hearts

Note: Screenshot is from the remasterd version. Combining a Square Enix action RPG with Disney characters is the kind of idea that makes you go, “why didn’t anyone do this sooner?” Kingdom Hearts isn’t going to win anyone over with its story or character development. The soundtrack, though, is the stuff of legends. It helps establish the game’s crossover theme, creating an enchanting atmosphere that is felt throughout the game. This doesn’t feel like you’re playing an action-RPG game that just happens to have Disney characters. It feels like you’re living in these Disney worlds, interacting in their daily lives. The Disney magic is felt throughout the experience. While it’s certainly not a perfect game, it’s the type of game you love to experience.

Beyond Good and Evil is a beloved cult classic

There’s a reason why we’ve been waiting so long for Beyond Good and Evil 2. The original is one of the best PlayStation 2 games available. While the game didn’t translate to commercial success, it earned its status as a cult hit. The combination of stealth action-adventure gameplay and memorable characters work well together. It may not have the super serious themes and messages as Metal Gear Solid, but it doesn’t have the preachy overtones that come with it. Thanks to absolutely gorgeous visuals and a fantastic story, Beyond Good and Evil became a sleeper hit. Perhaps one day, we’ll see the sequel release.

Burnout 3: Takedown

Often regarded as the best of the Burnout franchise, 2004’s Burnout 3: Takedown combines the best of arcade and drift-style racing. Traditional races are as fast and intense as ever. High-octane-style arcade racing is always a good time. Add in the fact that you’re encouraged to eliminate your opponents? That’s a recipe for one of the best PS2 games ever! Crash mode is the true star of the show here. It combines the best of Burnout’s style of play, big-budget movie explosions, and demolition derbies. The soundtrack is pretty dope, too.

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

Before the days of Uncharted and The Last of Us, Naughty Dog was known for Crash Bandicoot. While that platforming franchise didn’t make it to the PS2, another did: Jak and Daxter. The first entry, The Precursor Legacy, showcases how Naughty Dog evolves their brand of platforming. The result is a game that isn’t as challenging as Crash Bandicoot but far more accessible and grounded by its characters and story. As you’d expect from Naughty Dog, the graphics and animation are on point. The emphasis on a more refined platforming approach is well appreciated. It gives Jak and Daxter more of a polished and enjoyable experience. The characters are an absolute delight, and it’s a treat to see how Naughty Dog takes advantage of the newer PlayStation 2 hardware.

Amplitude

Before Harmonix helped usher in Guitar Hero and Rock Band, there was Amplitude. The music-based rhythm game predates plastic instruments, but the concept remains. You “shoot” notes to play the instrument track. Mess up, and certain parts of the song won’t play. Amplitude may lack the novelty of a Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but it still features the same rhythm-based gameplay. In a way, this works to Amplitude’s advantage. The game focuses less on living out a rock star fantasy and more on achieving high scores.

Persona 4

Before Persona 5 lit the world on fire, Persona 4 was one of the best JRPGs you could play. The game’s strength comes from how much enjoyment and entertainment can easily be derived from the experience. My first time with the game was spent not playing but watching others play, and I loved every second of it. Persona 4 gets a lot of things right by focusing on perfecting and refining the experience. There isn’t much in innovations, but there’s also no real need for them. Well-written story beats, likable characters, and well-paced combat help lead the charge. The strength of Persona 4 is the ability to present a nonsensical story premise (there are a lot of Scooby Doo vibes here) while tackling some mature themes. Nothing seems awkward, out of place, or forced.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness

Next up isn’t just one of the best PS2 games ever made, but one of the best games nobody ever played. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is a tactical RPG that hits all the highest notes of the genre. It combines clever and challenging gameplay with witty and hilarious writing. The visuals may not be up to par with other PlayStation 2 titles, but don’t let that hold you back. Hour of Darkness is so successful that it kickstarted the Disgaea franchise that’s still running strong today.

Viewtiful Joe

It is a travesty that we haven’t had more Viewtiful Joe games. We’ve already discussed stylish and slick PS2 games on our list, but it’s impossible not to include Viewtiful Joe. The side-scrolling beat ’em up incorporates the best of action games, movies, and comic books. The game’s slick visual style lends well to paying homage to the genres and mediums that inspire Viewtiful Joe. Action sequences are equally up to the occasion as well. The game’s combat is satisfying, matching the pace set by the game’s visual flair. Viewtiful Joe is the type of game that takes a classic genre and adds enough style for it to profile. It’s beautiful, catchy, and fun.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Simplicity is the name of the game for our next stop on our list of the best PlayStation 2 games. The eighth entry in the Dragon Quest franchise sticks to its roots and doesn’t overcomplicate the formula. This results in an enjoyable, entertaining, and accessible experience from start to finish. Journey of the Cursed King stands proudly with the tradition of basic yet essential turn-based combat and a silent protagonist. The English localization is the true star of the show here, featuring incredibly witty writing. There aren’t any obvious or glaring translation issues to be found here. The 3D cel-shaded visual style suits the game well. Its gorgeous and inviting visual aesthetic continually draws players in.

Gran Turismo 4

Gran Turismo 4 took its sweet time to release. Is the wait worth it? Honestly, that depends on who you ask. Polyphony Digital can still deliver an enjoyable simulation racing experience, though the gameplay feels like it takes a bit of a back seat. Where Gran Turismo 4 truly shines is being a beautiful digital showcase for the best cars in the world. The biggest appeal of Gran Turismo 4 is, undoubtedly, the cars. They are the true star of the show. At times, it feels less of a racing game and more of a virtual garage. That’s not necessarily bad, especially if you’re really, really into cars.

SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs

It’s a shame that the SOCOM franchise has fallen by the wayside. The third-person tactical shooter offers some of the best team-based gameplay the PlayStation 2 has ever seen. Whether playing the campaign or multiplayer, SOCOM II often feels ahead of its time. The required teamwork and strategic gameplay often has the feel of a modern-day shooter. Many have fond memories of putting on a headset, booting up their PS2, and playing SOCOM with friends. While gaming seems to have left the franchise behind, it will always hold a special place in our hearts.

ESPN NFL 2K5

A sports game? On a list of the best PlayStation 2 games? Hear me out. ESPN NFL 2K5 changed the game forever. It’s not just about its $19.99 price tag. It’s about the depth, content, and presentation available in the game. There is a certain style, and flair found within NFL 2K5. Terrell Owens is the perfect cover athlete for the game. It not only puts up an all-pro performance but does it with flash and flair. The Madden franchise is still trying to catch up nearly twenty years later. NFL video games haven’t been the same since.

Okami

We wrap up our list of the best PS2 games with titles that can be best described as works of art. First up is Okami, a watercolor painting that comes to life. The gameplay proves that this isn’t a matter of style over substance. Okami’s strength is that it keeps the player captivated during their entire session with the game. For Capcom to pull off this feat with a game that can last upwards of 40-60 hours is extremely impressive. There’s always something new to see and discover. The gameplay is engaging as it is beautiful. It’s incredibly easy to get lost in the scenery, the imagination, and the wonders of Okami.

Ico

Speaking of works of art, our list of the best PlayStation 2 games finishes with Ico. Released in 2001, it delivers an experience unlike any other. On the surface, the premise of Ico is simple. It is a three-dimensional platformer with a (mostly) fixed camera. That catch, though, is that you can only control one person. Ico, the player character, is helping your companion, Yorda, escape the castle featured in the game. This gameplay design adds a puzzle-solving component to the platforming. It is enhanced by the gorgeous visuals and environments featured in the game. Ico delivers an incredible experience that you’ll never forget.

If you’re talking about the most iconic video games of all time, you can’t ignore the library of PS1 games. The original PlayStation delivered some of the most memorable experiences in gaming history. From its infamous beginnings as Nintendo’s canceled answer to the Sega CD to the launching pad of the most iconic franchises in gaming, Sony’s debut console has a lot of history behind it. With that history comes a lot of games. While not every game can receive critical acclaim, plenty do. We will go over 25 of the best PS1 games ever made to honor that history and heritage. Sadly, we’ll have to leave some games off our list that otherwise would have made it. To make these difficult decisions, we’ll use critical acclaim, fan response, and personal opinion. Furthermore, the list will be presented in no particular order. Finally, we’re not ranking these; just reviewing 25 of the greatest PlayStation One classics. You may agree with the list; you’ll probably disagree. Either way, keep the conversation going in the comments below. Let’s begin!

Final Fantasy VII

It only seems fair to start our list of the best PS1 games with what may be the most iconic one. Final Fantasy VII redefined what is possible in a video game. An epic 3-disc RPG adventure, FFVII tells a story carried by the strength of its characters. The world-building, turn-based combat, and graphics are also revolutionary for their time. What’s most impressive about Final Fantasy VII is how it fully embraces being an epic story and lives up to its expectations. The first 3D Final Fantasy is a true tour-de-force that isn’t afraid to push the genre forward. It’s a sprawling, gigantic tale that doesn’t succumb to its own weight. There’s a reason why the remake has been so heavily anticipated: the game is indeed that good.

Final Fantasy IX

After the smash success of Final Fantasy VII, XIII turned out to be a divisive game that had its fans and detractors. Final Fantasy IX acts as a return to the franchise’s roots. The results speak for themselves: many view IX as one of the best in the franchise. Like other great Final Fantasy games, the strengths of Final Fantasy IX are the characters and the world they inhabit. The world of Gaia is a beautiful, medieval-esque realm that throws away the futuristic vibes of more recent games in the franchise. Instead, it’s a welcoming environment that’s enjoyable to explore. Final Fantasy IX introduces a more simplistic and accessible combat system. Prior games muddied the water a bit too much at times. It fits into the overall theme of a return to basics, resulting in a better game than its predecessors.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

How do you improve on perfection? I’m not quite sure, but the team at Neversoft sure knows. The recent Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 HD remake reminds us how amazing these games are. Everybody remembers the legendary soundtrack and insane tricks and maps. However, I’m not quite sure most people recall just how technically sound these games are. A big reason why recent releases or other similar titles failed to stick is the gameplay. They don’t capture the magic or feel of skateboarding like Tony Hawk. It’s not just about the style or personality that exists within the game but also the substance and fundamentals. Unfortunately, we may not see a remake of Tony Hawk 3 and 4, but we’ll always have the originals. For me, these games are a core memory.

Metal Gear Solid

Calling Metal Gear Solid ‘ahead of its time’ is an understatement. The original Metal Gear games offered a great tactical-stealth action experience. With the jump to 3D gaming, Metal Gear Solid isn’t just one of the best PS1 games but a cinematic masterpiece. The transition from a 2D to a 3D gaming environment did more than give Mario a platforming wonderland. It allows for an experience never seen before in a video game. There is no better example of that than Metal Gear Solid. In addition to delivering a more intimate and engaging stealth experience in a 3D environment, the storytelling is doubly enhanced. The series has gone to new heights since the PS1 release, but they all owe it to the ground Metal Gear Solid broke back in 1998.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Trying to find a flaw in Symphony of the Night is the job of a contrarian. Few games, even today, have matched the gameplay, story, and atmosphere that it offers. It’s hard even to figure out where to start. The gameplay is at the top of its class. Narratively, Symphony of the Night offers a pleasantly surprising amount of twists and turns for a 1997 game. The visuals are beautiful, vibrant, and alive. Maybe we start with the soundtrack, which still rivals as one of the best ever heard in a video game. It helps complete the entire package, resulting in a true symphony of a gaming experience. Other future releases in the “Metroidvania” genre have done well to push the genre forward. Still, they all owe it to Symphony of the Night.

Parappa the Rapper

We’ve talked about some true classics on our list thus far. While PaRappa the Rapper is another bonafide gem, it’s also a unique experience unlike most other games on the PlayStation console. One of the first true rhythm games, PaRappa allowed players to live out their musical fantasies. While you didn’t have to actually rap out the lyrics, there’s a chance you did anyway. The game’s catchy songs and hooks helped spread the title’s appeal. With gameplay focusing solely on keeping the beat, it opened up to a whole new potential audience. It lacked the complexities of some of the prior games on this list, instead focusing on delivering an entertaining and enjoyable experience. While the genre has expanded since PaRappa the Rapper’s original release in the late 90s, few games have been able to match its charm, appeal, and hook.

Gran Turismo

A common theme on our list of the best PS1 games is helping to shape a game’s genre. Billed as “the real driving simulator,” Gran Turismo lives up to those expectations. Simulation racers weren’t an entirely new concept, but this is one of the first releases in a 3D world. Gran Turismo is also the first time we’ve seen physics introduced in a racing game. The rest, as they say, is history. No other racing game delivered the same realism that Gran Turismo does. Even looking back today, the gameplay and visuals hold up surprisingly well. It’s another example of a PlayStation One game that helped shape the future of its genre.

Gran Turismo 2

The legend says that the original Gran Turismo was an unexpected success. Developer Polyphony Digital set out to make the sequel “an even better product.” They succeeded. Despite a release plagued with technical errors, Gran Turismo 2 delivers everything a sequel should. Perfecting the formula instead of reinventing the wheel is the name of the game here. The sequel delivers more of everything: more cars, more tracks, more races, and just flat-out more everything. It didn’t break the same ground as the original, but Gran Turismo 2 still deserves a mention among the best PS1 games. It’s a racing classic that shows you don’t always have to innovate

Chrono Cross

We’ve already talked about quite a few JRPGs on this list and for good reason. The PlayStation One is a great console for them. We’re going to talk about more, starting with Chrono Cross. Taking place in the same world as the Super Nintendo’s Chrono Trigger, 1999’s Chrono Cross received widespread acclaim upon release. While it differs from its predecessor in key ways, that change isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The game’s story is complex without being too confusing, offering plenty of entertainment value and replayability. The impressive lineup includes 45 different party members, all of whom bring something to the table. What may be most memorable with Chrono Cross is the battle system, which was made to avoid grinding and repetition. The uniqueness and complexities of the combat system may seem daunting at first, but they encourage being proactive as well.

Street Fighter Alpha 3

When it comes to fighters, PS1 games have two gold standards. The first should come as no surprise. Street Fighter Alpha 3 is yet another rousing success from Capcom. Backed by a robust and balanced roster of characters, Alpha 3 delivers a perfect arcade port to the home console. Combat is as close to fighting perfection as we can get. The crisp 2D graphics and visuals are an absolute delight. There isn’t much Street Fighter Alpha 3 does in terms of new ideas, but it also doesn’t have to. This is Street Fighter, after all, an all-time classic. By focusing on what works and including a bevy of characters, that’s how a great game was made.

Tekken 3

While Street Fighter perfected the 2D fighter, the Tekken franchise handled the 3D space. The result is a fighting game that transcends the genre. Never mind the best PS1 games, Tekken 3 is one of the best games ever made. I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but Tekken 3 helped pave the way for the fighting games we play today. The updated roster and usage of the 3D environment helped create a memorable and addicting fighting game experience. Other 3D fighters were popular around the same time, but none of them had the same impact as Tekken 3. Whether in the arcade or at home on PlayStation one, this was the fighting game.

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

While Super Mario 64 showed what is possible with a fully 3D platformer, Crash Bandicoot took a different approach. Blending precision platforming, challenge, and personality, Crash Bandicoot is a stylish, difficult, and enjoyable experience. The sequel, Crash Bandicoot 2, is the preferred choice for my wife. That’s a good enough reason for me to put it on this list. Thanks in part to refined gameplay, building upon the original’s foundation, and improved graphics, Crash Bandicoot 2 delivers a premier gaming experience. It’s not always forgiving, but it’s still a lot of fun.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

A sequel to 1996’s Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Soul Reaver is an incredibly ambitious title. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and directed by Amy Hennig, Soul Reaver delivered a modern gaming experience over twenty years ago. The game’s well-written story is enhanced by phenomenal voice acting from a cast headlined by Michael Bell. The complexity of the level design encourages players to actively think on their toes. Its nonlinear nature may have been off-putting back in the day, but compared to, say, FromSoftware games, it’s right at home. Later ports would ultimately fail to do the game justice. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is one of the best PS1 games and deserves either a remaster or a sequel today.

Vagrant Story

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: the PlayStation One features a great RPG. Vagrant Story is unlike the other RPGs on the PS1, though. Its visual style is unique, going all-in on 3D environments and character models. The gameplay follows suit as well; developer Squaresoft isn’t afraid to let Vagrant Story be its own thing, for better or worse. The gamble pays off for the better. The clever writing and story, deep and complex combat systems, and intricate story all work wonders. At launch, it was offputting, especially compared to other available RPGs on a console flush with them.

Twisted Metal 2

Sometimes, you don’t need a grand RPG adventure or cinematic experience to deliver one of the best PS1 games. Sometimes all you need is a little mayhem. Enter Twisted Metal 2. The follow-up to 1995’s Twisted Metal delivers improved characters and expanded levels. While the game isn’t the greatest visually, you’re not playing this franchise for the impressive graphics. You play Twisted Metal to blow stuff up, and that’s something Twisted Metal 2 is very, very good at. A diverse selection of weaponry goes well with the aforementioned roster and level expansion. It allows for a greater variety in terms of gameplay, delivering many memorable moments and unforgettable memories. Twisted Metal 2 isn’t the most complex game, but it’s one of the more fun ones on the original PlayStation.

Ape Escape

Ape Escape is the perfect example of a simple idea enhanced by its gameplay. Capturing apes sounds like a super tedious concept. Thanks to some ingenious controls and level design, Ape Escape is a top-tier platformer. The first game to require the DualShock controller, Ape Escape takes full advantage of analog controls. The result is a platformer that, at times, feels as revolutionary as Super Mario 64 when it comes to controlling and exploring your character. The visual style and gameplay setup do well to elevate the game from novelty to an all-time classic. It may not be the most exciting sounding of the best PS1 games, but it very well might be the best.

Resident Evil

So many of these PS1 games lay the foundation for their genres, don’t they? Anyway, here’s Resident Evil, which lays the foundation for the survival horror genre. Are some of the game’s “quirks” dated by modern standards? Absolutely. Is the voice acting, at times, comical? You bet. There’s no denying this, but there is also no denying what a landmark game Resident Evil is. Quirks aside, everything about the game works wonders. It sets the mood and atmosphere in ways few games can, delivering genuine scares and moments of fright and horror.

Resident Evil 2

I truly feel like a broken record. So many franchises were born on the PlayStation One. They helped pave the way for future releases in the series and their genres as a whole. As influential as those original games are, there are times when the sequel surpasses the original. Resident Evil 2 is, yet again, one of those times. The sequel improves upon the original in virtually every way. The atmosphere, story, gameplay, and graphics are all better than the first release. While franchise mainstays Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Albert Wesker were present in the original, the sequel introduces Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield.

Syphon Filter 

Many original PlayStation franchises have enjoyed long-term success. Syphon Filter, unfortunately, is not one of those franchises. Don’t blame the original, though. Released in 1999, Syphon Filter is a third-person stealth-action game. It borrows elements from some of the more successful games in the genre, particularly Goldeneye 007. The influences are seen throughout, delivering a game that pays homage to games like Goldeneye while still carving its own path. A highlight of the game is the enemy AI, allowing for a high level of replayability thanks to their varied behavior. Having an impressive arsenal of gadgets and weapons also helps.

Tomb Raider 

Lara Croft debuted on the PlayStation in 1996 and became an instant superstar. Tomb Raider helped define a new genre of video games. Part platformer, part shooter, part action/adventure, part puzzle solver, there’s a little something for everyone here. The game was visually impressive upon release, though obviously, things have aged just a tad bit. What’s still impressive today is the atmosphere and presentation. Tomb Raider absolutely nails what it’s like to, well, raid tombs. Presumably, anyway; I’ve never done anything of the sort. The best part of the game is that it’s on the PlayStation One, delivering an epic cinematic experience.

Silent Hill

Like Resident Evil, Silent Hill is the start of a multimedia franchise. Speaking of Resident Evil, many have compared Silent Hill to the original survival horror game. Unlike Resident Evil, Silent Hill offers a different take on the genre. Silent Hill delivers more of a psychological horror experience. It’s not just about an endless zombie onslaught or jump scares here. The game’s environment and atmosphere, combined with the 3D environments over pre-rendered environments, do wonders for the game. While the sequel is often regarded as one of the best games ever, don’t sleep on the original.

Final Fantasy Tactics

If I had a dollar for every time I heard one of my friends talk about how amazing Final Fantasy Tactics is, I’d be a very, very rich man. Tactical combat and RPGs are often a match made in heaven. Case and point, the Fire Emblem franchise. It’s confusing as to why Final Fantasy hasn’t taken this approach as often as it should, especially considering how strong of a game Final Fantasy Tactics is. The wide selection of jobs in the game helps to keep combat lively. Players are given plenty of options to truly take control of the battlefield as they see fit. Some see the limited size of the battlefield as a drawback, but the smaller scale opens up more options due to how developers utilize terrain. When it comes to story and characters, Final Fantasy Tactics delivers in the way you’d expect from a PS1 RPG, earning its place among the best PlayStation One games.

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins

Before the days of Sekiro, there was Tenchu: Stealth Assassins. While it lacks the brutal combat difficulty of a FromSoftware game, it packs satisfying action and top-notch stealth gameplay. The strength of Tenchu is the mood and atmosphere that persists throughout the game. Its difficulty doesn’t come from the game’s encounters but instead from the importance of stealth. Combined with an impressive soundtrack and impressive 3D environments, Tenchu is one of the most quintessential PS1 games. It has its fair share of quirks, but that only adds to its charm.

Driver

The Driver franchise would ultimately fall short compared to what Grand Theft Auto would do. The original PlayStation release, Driver: You Are The Wheelman, still somewhat resembles what GTA would become. While it lacks the open-world freedom to explore in and out of a car, the original Driver still lays the foundation for what would eventually come. Developer Ubisoft Reflections does a great job of paying homage to the car chase sequences of famed action movies that heavily inspire the video game. On the surface, the concept of having a game based solely on driving from point A to point B isn’t necessarily exciting. Still, the atmosphere, tension, and excitement fully translate, even with the limitations of the PlayStation One hardware.

Suikoden II 

Can you actually believe that upon original release, Suikoden II was docked for employing a 2D sprite art style over 3D graphics? Thankfully, retrospective opinions have given the game the praise it deserves. Combining that beautiful art style with an impressive roster of characters and engaging tactical gameplay, Suikoden II is an RPG masterpiece. It brings the best parts of the genre to the table: strong characters, a memorable story, and engaging combat. Part of what makes Suikoden II a great game is that it has the markings of a timeless classic for any interactive media. The story themes and narrative beats are able to appeal to any demographic, regardless of era. Add in the fact that it avoids some of the tedious trappings of other JRPGs, and you have an easy recipe for one of the best PS1 games ever.
