Is that a shooting star? No — it’s Kirby!
The pink wonder is speeding onto players’ personal devices early on Tuesday, August 19, in an all-new Nintendo Direct presentation. The event will run for around 45 minutes and will exclusively showcase Kirby and the upcoming Air Riders game for Nintendo Switch 2. Since the brand’s latest handheld dropped in June, Nintendo has held two other title-exclusive Direct presentations — one for Mario Kart World, the other for Donkey Kong Bananza — though the latter was just 15 minutes long.
The Direct was first announced in the brand’s Nintendo Today! app, a method the company increasingly uses to share big-time reveals. Earlier this year, Nintendo utilized its Nintendo Today! application to announce the release date for the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda adaptation.
Kirby Air Riders is a long-awaited follow-up to the 2003 GameCube hit Kirby Air Ride. The sequel is franchise creator Masahiro Sakurai’s first project since blockbuster fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate dropped for the OG Nintendo Switch in 2018.
The timing of tomorrow’s presentation may also give players pause. The Direct is scheduled just one day before Gamescom 2025 kicks off in Cologne, Germany. Nintendo will be in attendance, and while they’ve already shared some of the incredible content their booth will have on display — Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Hollow Knight: Silksong — there’s still time for Air Riders to sneak into the lineup as a playable option. Fresh off an exclusive Nintendo Direct seems like a prime time for our pink protagonist to make an appearance.
While nothing’s set in stone, fans can tune into the Nintendo Direct tomorrow at 6 a.m. PT/9 a.m. ET to see the spherical star-rider in all his glory. If you’re fortunate enough to have a hotel in Cologne booked, you can head to the brand’s Gamescom booth with your Nintendo account credentials at the ready and secure a commemorative pin as well as 100 Platinum Points.
