The state of Louisiana is suing online game creation hub Roblox, alleging the platform enables “the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana’s children.”
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed the lawsuit in the 21st Judicial District on August 14, 2025. Murrill detailed concerns during a press conference as well as in a formal release, where she alleged California-based Roblox Corporation chooses “profits over child safety.”
The 42-page suit argues the State of Louisiana will hold Roblox Corporation “accountable” for “the facilitation and distribution of child sexual abuse material and for the sexual exploitation of Louisiana’s minor children” through Roblox.
“Due to Roblox’s lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana,” said the Republican AG. “Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety. Every parent should be aware of the clear and present danger poised [sic] to their children by Roblox so they can prevent the unthinkable from ever happening in their own home.”
Most concerning, Murrill says, is Roblox’s lack of age verification. The suit claims young players can easily skirt protections by creating adult accounts with fake birthdays.
Murrill’s insistence that the site lacks safety measures for children isn’t new. Roblox has faced backlash in the past, most notably after one 13-year-old player was kidnapped, trafficked, and abused by an adult predator she came into contact with via Roblox.
Roblox responded to the Louisiana AG’s suit on August 15. “Roblox as a policy does not comment on pending litigation,” the response begins. “However, the company would like to address erroneous claims and misconceptions about our platform, our commitment to safety, and our overall safety track record.” Roblox’s release continues, citing steps it’s taken to mitigate minor safety concerns as well as the brand’s relationship with “law enforcement, government agencies, mental health organizations, and parental advocacy groups.”
“We aim to create one of the safest online environments for users, a goal not only core to our founding values but contrary to certain assertions, one we believe is critical to our long-term vision and success,” Roblox says. “We understand there is always more work to be done, and we are committed to making Roblox a safe and positive environment for all users.”
Roblox, a free online gaming platform, describes itself as “the ultimate virtual universe that lets you create, share experiences with friends, and be anything you can imagine.” The platform predominately comprises user-created content. In many games found throughout its colossal in-game catalog, players can use real-time messaging capabilities to communicate with other users. Celebrity collaborations have also generated hype among young fans. The latest — a Dress to Impress event featuring pop icon Lady Gaga — is underway until August 23, 2025. At the time of writing, the special in-game event has nearly 140,000 users in attendance.
In its Q2 2025 report, Roblox says it hosts more than 111 million monthly users. Additionally, Roblox says total “hours engaged” hit 27.4 billion, a 58% year-on-year jump. According to Statista, the site welcomed “39.7 million daily active users of Roblox games under the age of 13 … up from the previous year’s daily active user count of 32.4 million in the same age group.”
