10 Times Where Bad Actors Gave Great Performances

Not every actor out there is talented, and that’s okay. There’s only one Daniel Day-Lewis, after all.

In all honesty, a majority of the actors in Hollywood are pretty good at what they do. I mean, they wouldn’t be constantly finding work if they weren’t.

Yet there are some actors that, despite how many movies or shows they appear in, are just awful. Yet now and then, even the harshest critics out there can agree that these “bad” actors can give an excellent performance.

Mark Wahlberg

Marky Mark’s history speaks for itself. He has a devoted following and is a box office pull, but the quality of his filmography leaves something to be desired.

Ironically, the one role that he absolutely nailed is Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam in The Departed. It turns out that if the Boston-based actor plays a Massachusetts State Trooper, he’s capable of delivering a great performance.

Tim Allen

The man who helped immortalize the fictional show Tool Time is more than capable of making us laugh. Just look at The Santa Clause or Toy Story as great examples.

However, it’s his performance in Galaxy Quest that stands out above everything else. It’s like the role of JHason Nesmith was explicitly written for him.

Kate Hudson

Most of Hudson’s career could be described as forgettable, starring in what felt like an endless supply of romantic comedies that may or may not have all starred Matthew McConaughey (only two did, which isn’t a lot, but it’s still interesting).

She did impress recently in 2022’s Glass Onion, but it felt like she was really echoing the vibes of her performance in 2000’s Almost Famous. If the dictionary had the definition of an aloof fairy dream girl, it would be a picture of Kate Hudson’s Penny Lane.

Ben Affleck

It feels like you either love Ben Affleck or you hate him; there’s no in between. I’m from Boston, so I’m obligated to love him.

Even all the haters admit, though, that his performance in Gone Girl is unforgettable. You can’t help but feel like Affleck is always trying a little too hard to act rather than losing himself in a role, which is, ironically, perfect for the character of Nick Dunne.

Gal Gadot

It’s Gal Gadot’s performance in the first Wonder Woman movie that helped make her a major star in Hollywood. She’s undeniably fantastic in what ended up being one of the best DCEU movies ever released.

One thing that worked best for her was the fact that the character felt like a fish out of water. It turns out, though, that when you’re not the best actor, it’s easy to feel like you don’t belong.

Abigail Breslin

Speaking of arugbaly peaking from the start, Abigail Breslin’s career feels like it never took off the way many thought it would.

One reason is how well she nailed the role of Olive Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine. She would always have to live up to those impossible standards.

Keanu Reeves

Hear us out.

Keanu Reeves isn’t a bad actor; his strengths lie in choreographed stunt work. There’s a reason why he’s so great in The Matrix and John Wick.

If we’re talking his best overall performance, though, it’s not a movie; it’s a video game. His voice work as Johnny Silverhand is easily the best acting performance he’s ever done, helping to elevate an already hyped-up character further.

Johnny Depp

Sometimes you nail a role a little too well and ultimately, that character, and sometimes your career becomes a caricature of itself, such as Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.

It’s a shame, because Depp is more than capable of delivering great performances, none better than the titular character in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. You can really feel the weight of his entire family on his shoulders, and even the biggest Depp haters will end up feeling sorry for him by the end of the film.

Helena Bonham Carter

It only feels right to talk about Helena Bonham Carter after Johnny Depp, since the two are so often working together.

Bonham Carter’s roles certainly have a type, and Fight Club‘s Marla Singer somewhat falls into that type, but she really does give it her all in that role.

Adam Sandler

Say what you want about Sandler’s career, especially as of late. It feels like everyone’s not held back over their disdain for the comedian’s recent line of work.

I’ll always maintain, though, that he deserved the Oscar for Uncut Gems, and the fact that he wasn’t even nominated was a joke.
