Bungie confirms Marathon release date, delays Destiny 2 launch

Marathon, the upcoming first-person extraction shooter from Sony subsidiary Bungie, officially got its launch date. In a new post on Monday, the developer-publisher announced that the anticipated FPS will release on March 5, 2026, on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Bungie’s complete reveal also includes details about the game’s Standard, Deluxe, and Collector’s Editions, as well as a list of the game’s English-language cast. According to the announcement, “Marathon will also have fully-localized dialogue for all of our supported languages,” though those casts have not yet been revealed.

After Bungie confirmed the game’s release date, Marathon soared onto Steam’s list of top-selling titles. The PVP shooter now sits at no. 5 on the list, behind ARC Raiders, Counter-Strike 2, sales for Valve’s Steam Deck hardware, and Marvel Rivals, respectively.

Bungie also announced the release of Marathon-branded peripherals. The new Marathon Limited Edition DualSense PS5 wireless controller and the Pulse Elite wireless headset both feature the same vectorheart-like design seen throughout promotional images and teaser trailers. The DualSense controller will be available worldwide, but in limited quantities, for about $85. The Pulse Elite headset, however, is only available for purchase in the U.S. The over-ear headset will retail exclusively on direct.playstation.com for $170.

The game’s colorblocky, neobrutalist art direction drew eyes as the studio released early conceptual art, but in Spring 2025, the motif became the target of scrutiny following reports that independent artists’ work appeared in Marathon promotional content without permission or compensation.

‘Marathon’ delays ‘Destiny 2’ launch

Gamers who’ve been waiting in the wings for Marathon can pre-order their copy now, but the sooner-than-anticipated launch date leaves fans of another Bungie game, Destiny 2, scratching their heads. The latest Destiny 2 update, “Shadow and Order,” was originally slated for March 3, 2026, but according to a post on X by Forbes’ Paul Tassi, Bungie will allegedly hold the launch to accommodate Marathon. “Have heard Shadow and Order will in fact be delayed to make room for Marathon on March 5, given that it was supposed to come out on March 3,” Tassi explained in his post. “Not sure how long, or when it will be announced, however.”

Tassi expanded on the delay in a Forbes piece published Tuesday morning. “My sources tell me that yes, Bungie will delay the Shadow and Order update because it’s too close to Marathon’s release. I don’t know how far it might be delayed; I’d imagine more than a week, nor do I know when this will be officially announced, but it will probably be announced soon. But it’s happening.”
