There are many fantastic and iconic weapons in game history, but some are significantly more memorable than others. When we think of iconic game weapons, these are the top 20 that come to mind.

Energy Sword – Halo

There are many fantastic and iconic weapons in the Halo franchise, including the Plasma Gun and the Needler. However, the Energy Sword is one of the most iconic game weapons of all time. Its unique appearance makes it easy for players to associate it with the franchise. 

Despite the difficulty this weapon can present due to its lack of range, there are many ways to get fun kills with it and to get creative.

Keyblade – Kingdom Hearts

The weapon for Sora in Kingdom Hearts, the Keyblade, is truly iconic and is immediately recognizable as his weapon, even if other characters come to wield it later down the line. Although there are multiple types of Keyblades, the first Keyblade that Sora ever comes to wield is the one players are most familiar with. 

The Keyblade has a multitude of purposes, too, and doesn’t just serve as a weapon. It can be the key to unlocking chests and new worlds for Sora and his gang to explore.

Hidden Blade – Assassin’s Creed

If you’ve played any Assassin’s Creed game, you’ll know that the Hidden Blade is vital to success, and you will become very familiar with it as you stalk the back streets. It debuted in the first Assassin’s Creed in 2007 and has since been in the franchise except for Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. 

Because of its prevalence in the franchise, it has become widely associated with Assassin’s Creed and has significantly impacted gaming.

Holy Moonlight Sword – Bloodborne

The Moonlight Great Sword appears in multiple Souls games under different names and is a stunning weapon. Anyone who has played Bloodborne and the DLC will instantly recognize it. Coupled with some truly memorable dialogue, the Moonlight Great Sword belongs to Ludwig, the Holy Blade.

Players can then wield this weapon if they follow the prerequisite steps to obtain it, and it can transform from a one-handed Greatsword into a two-handed Moonlight Greatsword.

Soul Edge – Soulcalibur

For fans of fighting games, there are many iconic fighting styles and weapons across many games. However, one of the primary weapons that come out on top as the most iconic is the Soul Edge from Soulcalibur. Also known as “the Evil Sword,” this weapon appears frequently throughout the franchise. The most iconic appearance of this weapon is when it is wielded by Nightmare, the Azure Knight. 

Vampire Killer – Castlevania

An amazing whip, this is the heirloom of the Belmont clan and is an iconic weapon that appears in Castlevania. While many other weapons are used in Castlevania, the Vampire Killer has some great lore and can be a great, challenging option if you want that extra bit of difficulty in the game.

Gravity Gun – Half-life 2

The Gravity Gun is a really fun weapon that has a multitude of uses. While the early version of the weapon isn’t fantastic, as it can only be used to throw explosives and the like, it soon becomes even stronger, and you have a lot of power in your hands by wielding it. 

If you have played Half-Life 2, you know just how fun this weapon can be, and it can get pretty chaotic by the end of the game.

Scorpion’s Spear – Mortal Kombat

Accompanied by the iconic phrase “get over here!” players know that this will spell trouble, and they’re about to have to fight for their lives to escape Scorpion. A kunai attached to the end of a chain it flies across the screen and hooks into the player to pull them in, which can lead to certain death.

Blades of Chaos –  God of War

Forged by Ares as a gift to Kratos, the Blades of Chaos are iconic in the series and play an important role in Kratos’ story. They are the very blades that allowed him to defeat God and led to his significant rise in power, where he eventually became the God of War himself. 

Overall, the Blades of Chaos are incredibly cool and are worth learning about if you’re interested in the God of War lore.

BFG9000 – DOOM

The BFG9000 is a prominent weapon in gaming and is beloved by those who have played DOOM. It also has quite a comical element, taking up a considerable part of the screen when equipped. When fired, it shoots out a green orb that wipes out enemies in its wake. It’s a lot of fun and adds to the chaos of DOOM.

Blue Shell – Mario Kart

One of the most loved and hated weapons in gaming, the Blue Shell from Mario Kart is exactly what it says on the tin. When players roll this item, they can use it to travel straight to the person in first place, and the Blue Shell will explode on them. This can cause a lot of agitation for the person who was going to win the race as it can easily send them all the way back to 12th.

Dagger of Time – Prince of Persia

While it’s not a typical weapon in gaming, the Dagger of Time is a crucial relic that appears in multiple games in the Prince of Persia franchise. While this is a weapon that is instead used to turn back time, it is a crucial piece of kit that is used throughout the games to allow you to undo your mistakes. For fans of the franchise, the Dagger of Time is incredibly memorable and serves as an iconic weapon in gaming.

Frostmourne – World of Warcraft

Frostmourne is the glorious and downright terrifying weapon that belonged to the Lich King. It is an iconic weapon that could wreak havoc on anyone and anything. The Portal Gun is an absolute necessity for navigating the puzzling levels of Portal. However, you can also cause some absolute chaos with it, causing portal loops or shooting enemies (or allies) out of a portal and into the abyss. It is a lot of fun and is one of the most well-known weapons in gaming. 

Buster Sword  – Final Fantasy 7

The Buster Sword is incredibly iconic and a powerhouse in its own right. Wielded by Cloud Strife in Final Fantasy 7, this weapon has a lot of utility and serves as a reminder of Zack Fair. Passed from one hero to another, this weapon is more than just a sword; it reminds Cloud of his mission and reason to keep going.

Fat Man – Fallout 3

The Fat Man is a powerhouse that can do ridiculous damage if used. While it is an incredibly heavy weapon, it can also do immense damage if you have the right stats to wield it. A machine that fires mini-nukes, you can cause a lot of destruction with this weapon. What’s not to love?

Since its first appearance in the franchise, this sword has been one of the most memorable items in this game. It serves as a great reminder of the journey and plight that Link goes through to serve and protect Princess Zelda.
