Just because someone is starring in a major movie doesn’t mean they have to like it.
Yes, you can say they’re just taking a paycheck, but there are several other factors that could be at play here. The script someone reads when they take on a project could look very different when the film releases.
It feels like most of the time, an actor just powers through the press tour and goes on about their day. Not these actors, though. They have made it known they were not happy with what they just made.
Sandra Bullock – Speed 2: Cruise Control
I don’t know who was asking for a PG-13 sequel to Speed, but it’s what we got with Speed 2: Cruise Control.
Sandra Bullock, who was in the original film, returned for the sequel, but looking back, she wishes she didn’t.
“I have one…I’m still embarrassed I was in. It’s called Speed 2. I’ve been very vocal about it. Makes no sense. Slow boat. Slowly going towards an island.”
Channing Tatum – G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Paramount Pictures.
Look, I’m fully aware that G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is as far away from critically acclaimed as you can get. That said, I expected a mindless popcorn film, and that’s exactly what I got. I enjoyed it for what it was.
Channing Tatum, who stars in the movie, doesn’t agree with me. Despite turning down the offer to play Duke several times before being forced to take the part, he hated doing the film.
His character would be killed off in the opening moments of the sequel.
David Cross – Alvin and the Chipmunks
David Cross is known for being outspoken, and he’s used that reputation to make it known how much he hates this movie.
“All I wanted was to get…out of there as soon as possible,” he’s said about his experience working on the movie, “and buy a summer home with the check.”
Cross has described his time making the movie as the most unpleasant experience in his professional life.

Alec Guinness – Star Wars
Believe it or not, these two prior examples may not be the most famous examples of an actor hating a movie they star in.
‘Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi for the original Star Wars trilogy, absolutely hated his time making the movie.
“I just couldn’t go on speaking those bloody awful lines. I’d had enough of the mumbo jumbo.” Given Guinness’ acclaimed film history, I can at least understand why he’s not happy his most iconic role is Star Wars.
Sally Field – Amazing Spider-Man
On that note, it’s fair that sometimes, an actor just doesn’t mesh with a project.
That’s the case with Sally Field, who played Aunt May in the Amazing Spider-Man films starring Andrew Garfield. She was not too pleased with her time making it. “It’s not my kind of movie,” she said.
I get it; comic book movies aren’t for everyone, and it’s not surprising to see people openly express their displeasure for them.
George Clooney – Batman & Robin
While on the topic of comic book movies, yeah, we have to talk about this one.
Michael Keaton owned the role of Batman in the first two films. After that, however, no one could live up to his legacy during the Joel Schumacher films. Things always seemed off with Clooney assuming the role of The Caped Crusader, and he even agrees with that.
Clooney said that it “physically hurts” to watch his performance. I don’t blame him one bit; everyone who has watched this movie was physically hurt by it.
Val Kilmer – Batman Forever
Clooney isn’t the only big-screen Bruce Wayne to openly badmouth the movie he starred in.
Kilmer only took the role to make some money and become a wild auteur, which he saw as his destiny. He didn’t even read the script before accepting the part!
I mean, Batman Forever isn’t a good movie, but it’s nowhere near as bad as Batman & Robin, either. Kilmer’s biggest issues were, unsurprisingly, with the heavy Batsuit.
Gwyneth Paltrow – Shallow Hal
The movie Gwyneth Paltrow regrets the most has nothing to do with comic books, though she infamously doesn’t remember working with Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Paltrow calls the film the biggest regret in her career. Jack Black, her co-star in the film, agrees, saying that he felt like a sell-out in hindsight.
Sean Connery – James Bond
Many argue that Sean Connery is far and away the best actor to portray James Bond on the big screen.
However, Connery has expressed his distaste for the role on many occasions. His biggest issue is the fact that the films “don’t tax one as an actor.”
Connery has even said that, in regard to his dislike of Bond as a person, he would kill him.
Halle Barry – The Rich Man’s Wife
Barry hadn’t quite reached superstardom in 1996 when The Rich Man’s Wife was released, which meant she may have lacked the ability to change course during production.
The film was not well received on release, and it’s something that Barry knew would happen. In 2019, on The Late Late Show with James Corden, she said: “I kinda knew it wasn’t gonna be the greatest cinematic experience for the people.”
She admits that, in hindsight, she has no idea what was going through her mind when she took the part.
Ben Affleck – Armageddon
I love this movie. It also makes no sense, and Ben Affleck is right.
During the DVD commentary, he very infamously rips on the film’s premise of oil drillers being trained to become astronauts rather than the other way around.
“They don’t know jack about drilling? How hard can it be? Aim the drill at the ground and turn it on.”
Robert Downey Jr. – Dolittle
How did Robert Downey Jr. follow up his career as Tony Stark in the MCU? By playing Dr. Dolittle
Yeah, probably not the best idea, and it’s one he agrees with. Despite feeling “bulletproof” following the MCU, Downey Jr. was arguably blinded by the potential for another future franchise.
Dolittle was nowhere near good enough to be a franchise.
