The best movies are often filled with magical quotes that sometimes become more famous than the film they’re from.
That said, you’d be surprised at how often people get these iconic movie quotes wrong. Sometimes, its due to us inserting a word our brains think we should be there. Take Cool Hand Luke, for example. It’s “What we have here, is failure to communicate.” There is no “a” in the sentence. (Shoutout to Guns ‘N Roses for having this on the introduction of “Civil War,” too)
That’s not the only quote we’ve often gotten wrong. I’m not afraid to admit that I’m guilty of flubbing these iconic lines myself. So let’s recap a list of films filled with iconic quotes and set the record straight.
The Wizard of Oz

At some point in our life, we’ve all said, “Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.” We’ve heard it so many times in movies or television shows, and undoubtedly have used it when speaking with friends.
Here’s the thing: Dorothy actually says “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” To be fair, the misquote rolls off the tongue better.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Speaking of lines we’ve all said in our lives, if I had a dollar every time I, or someone else, has said, “Luke, I am your father,” I’d be a very rich man.
However, we’re all wrong. After Luke cries out that Obi-Wan Kenobi told him Darth Vader killed his father, Vader delivers the iconic reveal: “No, I am your father.”
The Silence of the Lambs

“Hello, Clarice.”
When someone things of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, they certainly think of that iconic line when he first meet’s Clarice Starling. There’s just one issue: he never says the line. Instead, he simply says, “Good morning.”

Saw

From one iconic horror misquote to another.
Everyone in the 2000s loved to tell everyone “Do you want to play a game?” in their best creepy voice. However, that’s not the line from the Saw franchise. Instead, it’s “I want to play a game.”
Casablanca

I mentioned it when talking about The Wizard of Oz: sometimes our misquote simply rolls off the tongue more naturally than the actual line.
That’s the case here. “Play it again, Sam,” sounds better and, honestly, a lot cooler than the actual line: “Play it, Sam.”
Star Trek

Fun fact: at no point in the entire franchise does anybody say, “Beam me up, Scotty.”
There are, however, some close variations, including “Scotty, beam me up” in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Kirk also said “Beam us up, Scotty” in a 1968 episode of the original series.
Jaws

People will adamantly defend that “we’re going to need a bigger boat” is the correct line. Not gonna lie, it’s also a way cooler line.
However, Chief Brody actually says “You’re going to need a bigger boat.” Don’t just take my word for it; that’s the title of the scene’s video on YouTube!
Dirty Harry

On second thought, maybe going off a YouTube video title isn’t the best idea. To be fair, the Jaws clip is from Universal Studios.
In the case of Dirty Harry, the YouTube channel Movieclips also gets the line wrong. It’s not “Do You Feel Lucky, Punk?” It’s, “Do I feel lucky? Well, do you punk?”
Snow White

Who hasn’t in their life looked at their mirror and said, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”
We’re not here to talk about whether or not we’ve ever received the correct answer. Though, I will say, maybe we would have if we said the line correctly: “Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”
Wall Street

Gordon Gecko’s legacy has been built on three simple words: “Greed is good.”
In reality, the actaul line, which ironically carries a lot more weight, is, “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good.”
The Godfather

Who hasn’t in their life done their best Marlon Brando impression and said, “You come teo me on the day of my daughter’s wedding.”
While it’s easily one of the most iconic lines in movie history, good ole’ Don Corleone actually says, “You come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married.”
