‘Monster Hunter Wilds’ Reaches Steam’s Most-Played List Hours After Release

Capcom’s brand-new action RPG, Monster Hunter Wilds, is already making waves and breaking records just hours after its release. Figures from digital game distributor Steam show nearly 1 million players hopped into the fray within its first hour on the platform. In the 12 hours since Wilds hit the online retailer, it eclipsed many of the platform’s previous Day 1 records. The highly anticipated role-playing game hit an all-time peak of 1,307,976 concurrent players just before 10 a.m. EST, propelling it to Steam’s most-played titles of all time.

At this rate, Monster Hunter Wilds is likely to land among the platform’s five most-played games of all time. At time of writing, it’s inched up to No. 6 on Steam’s most-played titles ever, with nearly 1 million players currently in-game. The new release has bumped blockbuster titles from their former spots, including Dota 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Elden Ring. However, popular battle royale PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS still holds the top spot, with Black Myth: WukongPalworldCounter-Strike 2, and Lost Ark comprising the rest of Wilds‘ competition.

Even with surging numbers during the traditional work week, many gamers still at 9-to-5’s likely won’t boot up their PC until tonight or later. Many record-setters, unsurprisingly, reached their all-time peaks on Saturday or Sunday. With an entire weekend ahead, the new RPG just might work its way past even more tough-to-top titles.

Despite shocking player counts, reviews for Monster Hunter Wilds remain mixed, with many citing performance issues. Capcom Support has already released step-by-step instructions for frustrated gamers. But their primary advice? Ensure your rig can run the game before you add a copy to your Steam cart.
