Cambridge-based video game developer Jagex revealed its upcoming RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a new open-world survival game that turns the decades-old MMORPG IP on its head.
The new title, coming to early access on PC this spring, revisits and revitalizes the early aughts classic RuneScape. The entry takes place in the fantasy setting of Ashenfall, a forgotten continent in the classic RuneScape universe. Dragons seem to be stirring on the long-lost territory, and players are up to bat, tasked with manipulating magic and classic RuneScape capabilities to tackle baddies.
Jagex’s latest release reveals “dragons have awoken” on Ashenfall. “On RuneScape’s forgotten continent of Ashenfall, dragons have awoken. Gather, build, skill and craft to survive in this co-operative survival crafting game. Only by mastering survival and uncovering ancient secrets can you hope to slay the Dragon Queen—alone or with allies.”
Dragonwilds will offer players enhanced cooperative capabilities that allow up to four players to work alongside one another in classic RuneScape crafting, camping, and skill-building. Gamers will also run into some familiar critters, but they’ve become distorted husks of their former selves thanks to corrupt magic.
Ashenfall’s dual regions and unique biomes mean new experiences, discoveries, sights, and sounds for players of all ages and skill levels. Still, plenty of classic RuneScape elements remain. Fans of the original roleplaying game’s more grindy activities, like cooking, crafting, and woodcutting, can still partake.
Experts at Jagex expect work on open-world RuneScape: Dragonwilds to finish sometime in early 2026, but with around a year to go, much can change. Dragonwilds is powered by Unreal Engine 5, the same engine behind visually stunning recent titles like Avowed, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, and Split Fiction.
For more information from the folks at Jagex, tune into the team’s upcoming Twitch broadcast, scheduled for April 15 at noon EST, where the team will delve deeper into what Dragonwilds has to offer.
Eager beavers can ensure they’re as plugged in as possible by wishlisting the game on Steam today.
