Three cheers for small game studios!
The internet-breaking Oblivion Remastered shadowdrop didn’t hamper the record-breaking success of independent game studio Sandfall Interactive’s new RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
The French studio’s team comprises just 30 creatives, but sales of the group’s Belle Époque-set open-world RPG have now eclipsed 1 million copies in just 72 hours after launch.
Sandfall Interactive celebrated its milestone via its social media accounts.
“And here we are. Three days after launch. One million copies sold. Thank you for believing in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,” reads the studio’s celebratory post on blossoming microblogging service Bluesky.
Sandfall Interactive expanded on these figures with even more impressive qualifiers, noting that the shared figures reflect purchases only; the 1 million copies do not account for the number of players enjoying Expedition 33 through their Xbox Game Pass membership.
Sandfall is no stranger to explosive social media statements, having hopped on just two days prior, revealing the game sold 500,000 copies on its first day.
The small-but-mighty team’s stupefying stats come alongside critical acclaim and heartfelt fan testimonials.
Fans of turn-based RPGs can hop into Expedition 33 for a story-rich, visually striking, dystopian adventure that follows Expeditioners teaming up to take down a mystifying apparition known as the Paintress.
Every year, the looming and omnipresent figure paints a new numerical age onto a Monolith. Everyone of that age is sentenced to death, and the Paintress continues her goal of shrinking the Last Generation of Lumiere until it’s erased for good.
