2025 has been a great year for games, with heavy hitters and some surprise indie titles. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth brought us back to one of our favorite stories with fresh eyes.
RGG graced us with a spin-off starring Majima as a yakuza pirate. Blue Prince had us planning runs and layouts in the manor while we were sleeping. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 reinvigorates turn-based combat and hits you with an emotional story.
The Game of the Year conversation will be crowded by year’s end. Here are some games to get hyped for the rest of 2025.
DOOM: The Dark Ages (May 13th)

Time to rip and tear once again in DOOM’s most expansive game yet. How can DOOM become more metal, you ask? By going back to the medieval time period, of course. You have a gun that grinds skulls and uses pieces of bone as projectiles. You have the Chainshot, which is a gun version of a mace, sounds crazy, I know.
With new weapons and ways to kill, DOOM: The Dark Ages looks to be the best DOOM yet. Oh! Mighty DOOM Slayer, may ye kill all the demons in sight with extreme brutality.
Mario Kart World (June 5th)

With the Switch 2 launch just around the bend, it only makes sense that a new Mario Kart crosses the finish line at launch. While some might scoff at the $80 price tag, you can’t deny it is packed with content. It’s filled with new modes, characters, tricks, items, tracks, and costumes.
For the first time ever, you can free roam the world that is packed full of courses and surprises. I hope you were able to pre-order a Switch 2 because Mario Kart World looks like a fun time.
The Alters (June 13th)

After playing the demo for The Alters during Steam’s Next Fest, I was blown away by the unique concept explored by the title. Upon crash landing, you find an empty base, but you have to beat the sunrise, or you will die. You need to repair the base’s engine, but you are no mechanic.
In another timeline, your life played out differently, and you became a mechanic. To survive, you must create those alternate versions of yourself to help you survive. You get to alter the timeline of your life. The lab of the base creates another you. How many versions of you will it take for you to survive?

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach (June 24th)

Genius Kojumbo will strike again. Hideo Kojima will once again predict some kind of future disaster in his latest title. Death Stranding was one of the strangest and emotional games I’ve ever played. I’m very interested in what story will be told in the second game.
The trailer raises a million more questions than it answers, and that is what I love about Kojima’s games. Get ready for masterful performances delivered by the star-studded cast. Practice your delivery and ghost fighting skills before Death Stranding 2 drops.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 (July 8th)

Iron Galaxy has made some small changes to the old-school formula, but hopefully, it’s for the better. The new soundtrack fuses the classic THPS music we love with the modern era. The revert introduced in THPS 3 allowed players to link vert tricks (done on halfpipes) with manuals and flatland combos, effectively blowing the ceiling off score potential and combo creativity. It changed the series forever.
Every numbered title felt like a step forward. If 3+4 is successful, we could see more classic Tony Hawk games return with modern designs.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater (Aug 28th)

Snake Eater is often discussed as one of the greatest games ever made. This remake is an opportunity to bring this PS2 classic into the modern age. The tale of Big Boss and how he got his title is a story of betrayal, love, and espionage.
Using the old voiceover proves that this remake is out to preserve the original, rather than changing things up. Modern controls and gameplay should easily make Delta join the ranks of the all-time greats. It does make me a bit sad that Kojima has nothing to do with Delta; it would’ve been nice to see Konami rebuild the bridge with Kojima after all these years.
Ghost of Yōtei (Oct 2nd)

Ghost of Tsushima was a beautiful game about revenge. The minimal UI, the beautiful landscapes, and the samurai combat were all excellent. All the pieces made a solid game that was loved by many. Jin’s story seems to be over for now, so Sucker Punch looked 300 years into the future.
Atsu’s story isn’t as linear as the first game. You can go anywhere and find any of the villainous Yōtei Six in any order. We haven’t seen the combat or what the weapons will be just yet, but we know it will be incredibly detailed and a lot of fun. Ghost of Yōtei also touts the biggest playable map that Sucker Punch has ever made. Get ready to help Atsu seek her revenge in early October.
GTA VI (TBA)

Many mysteries still surround Rockstar’s upcoming title. We’ve heard rumors about its development budget, release dates, and price tag. All we have to go by is what the trailer has shown and what people from Rockstar have told people in interviews.
This looks to be an ambitious project that can make or break the studio. If they pull off everything they set out to do and don’t cripple the game by worrying about monetization over fun, we might be looking at game of the decade. You will be immersed in a living and breathing world that mirrors our own through the lens of Grand Theft Auto. We could be looking at one of the biggest releases in modern gaming. For now, you’ll have to keep up the ‘we got this before GTA VI’ memes I see in TikTok comments, but sometime later this year, you’ll have sweaty hands on GTA VI.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A (TBA)

I’m a simple man. I hear a new Pokémon game, and I mostly ignore them. Pokémon has to be in the thousands of hours for play time for me, so I’m not always looking forward to the new titles. Slapping the Legends name on the end makes it gain my full attention.
Running around the world and aiming the Poké Balls yourself just feels different. It just feels like Legends is the next step for the series. We need evolution and less of the same old. Fully exploring the cities and towns from Pokémon X and Y is very appealing. At night, the Z-A Royale takes place. Trainers start at Z rank and try to move up the ranks to A by battling their way through the tournament.
The Switch 2 version will certainly feature several enhancements over the Switch release. Z-A will definitely help more Switch 2 consoles fly off the shelves.
