Xbox reveals ‘multi-year’ collaboration with AMD

On Tuesday, Microsoft confirmed its new partnership with U.S.-based tech company AMD. Xbox says AMD will power upcoming devices, including its next-gen console. The brand’s last home console, the Series S|X, first retailed during the 2020 holiday season.

According to an announcement from Xbox President Sarah Bond shared via X (formerly Twitter), the Microsoft subsidiary will give fans “an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device.” Bond asserts the duo plan to “deliver the next-generation of graphics innovation to unlock a deeper level of visual quality, immersive gameplay, and player experiences enhanced with the power of AI.”

Bond also says the duo will collaborate on Xbox Cloud Gaming. “This is all about building a gaming platform that’s always with you, so you can play the games you want across devices anywhere you want, delivering you an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device,” Bond states. “That’s why we’re working closely with the Windows team to ensure that Windows is the number one platform for gaming.”

With continued consumer interest in handhelds like Valve’s Steam Deck and the headline-making success of Nintendo’s Switch 2, Xbox is forward about expanding its offerings beyond traditional home consoles.

Just last week, the brand officially unveiled two new ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. The collaborative hardware comprises yet another partnership, this time between Xbox and electronics manufacturer Asus. The Taipei-based tech brand made serious waves with its small-but-mighty Asus ROG Ally in June 2023, which it marketed as a direct competitor to Valve’s Steam Deck.

While Xbox has yet to formally announce a next-gen first-party console, fans can expect the Windows-utilizing ROG Xbox Ally by year’s end.
