14 Movies That Changed Real Life Behavior

Not every movie may be based on a true story, but some films can change how people act in real life.

Sometimes, a fictional celebration in a movie helps inspire a local community to start having one. Other times, movies scare us so much that they create phobias.

Here are movies that changed how people act in real life. Sometimes, it’s for the better, but that’s not always true.

I don’t know about you, but I get nervous when driving behind a log truck.

I’m already uneasy driving behind any vehicle with a load that doesn’t look secure, but Final Destination 2 only worsened my fears.

The Karate Kid

This shouldn’t be a surprise, but the movie’s popularity led to an uptick in public interest in karate.

As a result, more kids across the country participated in karate classes.

The Mighty Ducks

The Walt Disney Company founded a hockey team in Anaheim, California in 19903.

A year prior, Disney also released a hockey movie, The Mighty Ducks. The film inspired the company to name its new team the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Disney sold the team in 2005, and they are now simply referred to as the Anaheim Ducks.

Ever wonder where some people’s fear of water may have come from? Look no further than Jaws.

Although the probability of a shark attack is extremely rare, that has not stopped people from being afraid to swim at beaches.

Blackfish

From one sea creature to another.

The controversy surrounding the 2013 documentary Blackfish resulted in a drop in attendance at SeaWorld and the eventual end of their killer whale shows and orca breeding program.

Top Gun

Did the iconic Tom Cruise movie make you feel like signing up for the Navy? You’re not alone.

There was a spike in Navy recruitment following the film, with some theaters even having Naval officers register people on their way out.

Finding Nemo

It should come as no surprise that a children’s animated movie results in a spike in toy sales based on that movie.

Finding Nemo was a little different, though, as it resulted in a spike in clownfish sales.

Super Size Me

Remember when you could “super size” your meal at McDonald’s? I sure do.

That all changed following the release of Super Size Me, which portrayed the adverse side effects of fast food consumption.

Office Space

The restaurant chain TGI Fridays used to have a fair policy for its servers.

That all changed after Office Space made fun of the amount of flair, or eccentric buttons, servers had to wear.

I guess the Mike Judge comedy is more influential than I realized!

One of the subplots in the film is Milton’s obsession with his red Swingline stapler. There’s just one problem: Swingling didn’t sell a red stapler before the movie was released, but it’s now one of their best selling items.

Scream

Caller ID wasn’t popular until the late ’90s, and there’s one movie to thank for it.

Scream‘s iconic opening scene wouldn’t have worked as well as it does if Drew Barrymore knew who was calling. The film led to the utilization of caller ID rising 300% after the movie was released.

WarGames

During a cabinet meeting, Ronald Reagan asked if something like the events of WarGames could happen in real life. John Vessey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, said, “The problem is worse than you think.”

This helped inspire new regulations at the Department of Defense and the passing of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986.

Spectre

The opening scene of Spectre features a huge Día de Los Muertos parade in Mexico City. Fun fact: before the movie was released, there was never a parade in real life!

Ever since 2016, a parade has taken place, having been inspired by the movie.

Titanic

I’ve done it. Chances are, you’ve done it, too.

Any time someone’s on a boat following the release of Titanic, there’s a chance they’ve shouted, “I’m king of the world!” Don’t lie, you’ve thought about doing it yourself.
