15 Movies So Bad We Walked Out Of The Theater

sucker punch

Movie tickets have become so expensive that walking out on a bad movie feels like a bad decision. It’s like an internal struggle to see what’s worse: wasting our money by leaving or sitting through a terrible movie.

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and leave. We may be out that money, but we’ll get that time back in our day to do something better.

There’s no denying that Mike Myers is a talented comedian, but it became apparent in the late 2000s that he was past his prime.

Despite seeing runaway success voicing Shrek, his 2008 bomb The Love Guru is so bad that even buying a movie ticket for $2 is a waste of money.

Wing Commander

Before the internet existed, the only place to watch movie trailers was, well, the movies.

Before Wing Commander started, it aired a trailer for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. That trailer was far better than the disaster that was Wing Commander, so at least we got our money’s worth before walking out.

Sin City

I was hoping to get a stylish neo-noir comic book adaptation.

Instead, the monotone dialogue matched the black and white visuals. I had to walk out before I fell asleep in the theater. Sorry, guys: I don’t get the hype with this one.

The Spirit

Those who did enjoy Sin City were hoping for more of the same from The Spirit, another Frank Miller film.

However, this one missed the mark completely. Despite some slick visuals, the plot is a gigantic mess, and the ensemble cast can’t elevate lackluster characters.

Dude, Where’s My Car?

There’s nothing wrong with a stupid comedy. They’re some of my favorite guilty pleasure movies.

However, Dude, Where’s My Car? tests my patience from the very beginning. Maybe watching the movie sober meant I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, but I don’t know if that would have solved anything. This movie is the definition of dumb.

Dumb and Dumber To

Speaking of stupid comedies, the original Dumb and Dumber is one of the best.

However, this is one film that should never have gotten a sequel. It’s pure nostalgia bait that fails on every level. I’d rather see the prequel they made without Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels.

Downsizing

The 2017 Matt Damon movie was advertised as a comedy where Damon shrinks his body.

In reality, the movie is a huge bait and switch, turning into an incredibly preachy and off-putting political story.

While many people weren’t aware of what Downsizing was about, most people knew exactly what Twilight was about. Well, most women were.

As for the men who only knew about the buzz and hype around the vampire movie, I reckon most walked out the second Edward Cullen sparkled in the sunlight.

Sucker Punch

Some people felt like Zack Snyder could do no wrong in the 2000s. There’s no denying how stylish his movies are, and his adaptations of 300 and Watchmen are incredible.

His first original story, Sucker Punch, is all style and no substance. It’s a complete waste of time.

Cloverfield

To be fair, I’d eventually walk back in, but here’s a word of the wise to you all out there: eating a large bucket of popcorn before a movie like Cloverfield, which uses a lot of handheld shaky camera filming techniques, is a bad idea.

Joker: Folie à Deux

The original Joker is one of the highest grossing R-rated films of all time, boasting a worldwide gross of over $1 billion.

When it was announced Lady Gaga would be joining the sequel as Harley Quinn, it felt like Folie à Deux was guaranteed to exceed that mark. Then the movie came out, along with poor reviews and unhappy audiences walking out of the theater.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Look, I love The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I watch it every year.

The Hobbit isn’t even close to being on the same level. It’s a bloated mess of a film that should have never been stretched into two movies, never mind three. Heck, I’d argue it shouldn’t even have been made at all.

The Golden Compass

Following the success of The Lord of the Rings, it felt like everyone was content to find acclaimed fantasy novels and adapt them into the next big thing.

This one hit hard for me. I love the His Dark Materials trilogy of novels and was super excited to see The Golden Compass. However, it’s so watered down compared to the source material that I had no choice but to walk out.

Batman & Robin

Joel Schumacher’s first go with the Batman franchise isn’t necessarily good, but it’s not that bad. I kinda liked it when it came out!

Having said that, Batman & Robin is as every bit as bad as you remember it being. It was one of the first movies I ever walked out on.

The Dark Tower

There is so much potential for a proper adaptation of the iconic Stephen King franchise.

Trimming it all down to a 95-minute(?!) movie is not the ticket, though. Here’s to hoping someone else does this property justice, ideally with a television series rather than a movie.
