10 Actors Who Didn’t Deserve The Hate They Got From Fanbases

Actors Who Didn't Deserve The Hate They Got From Fanbases

It’s an unfortunate part of the entertainment world today: certain actors receive an extreme amount of hatred and backlash from their fan bases.

Most of the time, it’s completely unwarranted, and the grim reality of a world dominated by social media.

Just because faceless trolls are talking badly about these actors doesn’t mean they deserve it. Just remember that you don’t like the character; the more you hate the character, the better the actor is at their job.

Be warned, we’ll be talking about some spoilers.

Jack Gleeson – Game of Thrones

Sometimes, you do such a good job of acting as a villain that people hate you. That’s the case with Jack Gleeson’s performance as Prince Joffrey in Game of Thrones.

Think of the worst person in the history of the world. I guarantee you that Joffrey is worse. The man did horrible, horrible things, and we understood how cruel and evil he was due to Gleeson’s performance.

That doesn’t mean we should hate him. If anything, we should be praising him.

Jenna Fischer – The Office

As much as people love Jim and Pam in The Office, some fans were none too happy with Jenna Fischer. Once again, they’re taking out their frustrations with the character on the actor.

It’s something the show even referred to in the finale, where, during the panel, an audience member brings up all the things Jim did for Pam.

Pam sticking with art school and being overwhelmed when Jim was busy with Athlead doesn’t mean we should hate her.

Jake Lloyd – Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

To say that Jake Lloyd was under immense pressure as a kid playing Anakin Skywalker is an understatement.

I’m not sure if anyone could have pulled that role off successfully, not just because of their age, but also due to a poor script and direction from George Lucas.

Look, I love Star Wars, and The Phantom Menace is a guilty pleasure movie of mine, but let’s be real here: I’m not watching it for the dialogue.

Kelly Marie Tran – Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Yeah, we’re not done talking about the Star Wars fanbase just yet.

I know The Last Jedi is incredibly divisive among the fanbase, and the Rose Tico character and plotline are one reason why. That doesn’t mean fans should be taking their frustrations out on Tran.

The biggest flaw of Rose Tico is that she serves as a guiding light to John Boyega’s Finn. I thought she was an essential character for the plot and the movie’s overall message, and nowhere near worthy of the hate she received.

Hayden Christensen –  Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

Okay, one last entry about Star Wars, and we’re moving on, I promise.

One of my favorite things about the Disney+ shows is seeing Christensen return to the Anakin Skywalker character. Not only is it a delight to see him in the role and interact with the fan base again, but it’s also incredible to see him working with stronger writing and direction, allowing Christensen to showcase his strengths and talents.

Bella Ramsey – The Last of Us

It’s no secret that gamers can be particularly hostile, and we’ll talk more about that specifically here in just a bit, but for now, let’s talk about Bella Ramsey’s “flaws” when it comes to portraying Ellie: She doesn’t closely resemble the video game version of Ellie enough.

Even if you disagree with her talents and ability to portray a beloved character accurately, that doesn’t make it right to hate her. She’s doing her job, and based on the critical reception, she’s doing it well.

Anna Gunn – Breaking Bad

To call Skyler White one of the most hated characters in television history is an understatement. People do not like her, and, given her character’s writing, especially early on, I can see why. Walter White is initially portrayed as an anti-hero doing what he can, whereas Skyler is the actual moral compass and one who deserves our compassion.

However, Bryan Cranstoun’s charisma and performance had viewers rooting for him, even as he descended further and further into madness and villainy. As a result, people grew to loathe Skyler.

Brie Larson – Captain Marvel

Given the fact that Captain Marvel made over $1 billion at the box office, it’s safe to say I’m not the only person who liked it. Is it a perfect movie? No, it suffers from the same issues as virtually every other Marvel origin movie does.

Having said that, there’s a lot of chemistry between Larson and Samuel L. Jackson that helps carry the movie past its flaws.

Rachel Zegler – Snow White

The most recent Walt Disney live-action adaptation, Snow White, bombed at the box office. At the time of writing, it failed to make over $200 million at the box office.

That’s not due to Zegler’s performance, though, as critics have pointed out that she’s one of the few bright spots in the film, giving it her all to make it work despite everything else falling apart around her.

Halle Bailey – The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid was one of the first movies I ever saw in theaters. Granted, I was two when it came out, so I have little to no memory of that experience, but you better believe I wore out the VHS tape at home, dancing along to “Under the Sea.”

Given the strength of its soundtrack, I was excited to see how the 2023 live-action adaptation would fare. Sadly, the second Bailey was announced as playing Ariel, fans had already made up their mind, slinging unwarranted hate before production even began.

She’d get the last laugh, though, as Bailey proved herself worthy of the role.
