After years of speculation and an official greenlight last fall, Amazon MGM Studios is finally dusting off the Normandy.
Amazon Prime Video has named Star Trek Beyond writer Doug Jung as showrunner of its upcoming Mass Effect project, according to Deadline. Jung will join forces with screenwriter Daniel Casey (F9, Kin), who Deadline says has been working on the project for nearly one year. Jung, currently the showrunner and executive producer of Apple TV+’s upcoming drama Chief of War, has also worked on Mindhunter and The Cloverfield Paradox.
Electronic Arts’ Michael Gamble, Cedar Tree Productions’ Karim Zreik, and Arad Productions’ Ari Arad and Emmy Tu will produce the project.
Rumors regarding Mass Effect‘s small-screen debut have circulated since 2021. But in the years since, numerous successful gaming adaptations — including Amazon Prime Video’s own dystopian blockbuster Fallout — have taken the industry by storm, likely incentivizing project progression.
Electronic Arts first introduced its revolutionary RPG Mass Effect to sci-fi fans in November 2007, releasing the first installation exclusively on Xbox 360 consoles. Since then, fans of the choose-your-own-adventure franchise have enjoyed three additional entries, with a fifth in the works, as well as novels and other media. The BioWare-developed series follows Systems Alliance veteran and first human Citadel Council member Commander Shepard through their fight against the aggressive, invasive Reapers.
