Boutique design studio Lost in Cult is releasing a premium art collection chronicling indie video game sensation Animal Well.
Game developer Billy Basso, publisher Bigmode, and executive producer Dan Adelman worked closely with Lost in Cult to document, detail, and honor the 2D pixel Metroidvania’s woozy, atmospheric environment.
The officially licensed hardback, perfect for your coffee table or game room bookshelf, utilizes more than 200 pages to give gamers a closer look at Animal Well‘s artistic intricacies.

Though the game’s bursting with dreamy design and enriching underground exploration, readers can uncover more secrets behind the now-cult classic and critical darling’s immersive map and perturbing puzzles.
Animal Well, first released on May 9, 2024, took a whopping seven years to assemble. Lost in Cult’s upcoming chronicle covers the game’s journey from start to finish, with early prototypes and commentary. The collection also includes comprehensive interviews with Bigmode’s Jason and Leah Gastrow. The content-creating couple, known by fans online as Videogamedunkey and Leahbee, channeled their YouTube success and passion for gaming into an indie publishing company.
“Animal Well balances beauty and ingenuity, all delivered with a quiet brilliance,” said Shaun Hughes of Lost In Cult. “As its fans will tell you, every hidden path and ambient hum tells a story – and with Design Works, we set out to preserve that creative spirit in a lovingly crafted volume that honours both the game and the people behind it.”
Fans can pre-order Animal Well: Design Works in Standard or Deluxe Editions until the limited-time offering ends on July 1, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. PT/1:00 p.m. ET. The collection, manufactured in the U.K., is expected to ship in Q2/Q3 2026.

Though pre-orders officially began Thursday, May 8, fans ordering a Deluxe Edition copy before 10:00 a.m. PT/1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 10, are still eligible to receive a Billy Basso-signed bookplate.
