Family-Friendly Platformer ‘Astro Bot’ Wins ‘Game of the Year’ Award — Again

Astro Bot, the colorful and quirky platformer from Tokyo-based Team Asobi, snagged another Game Of The Year distinction. The 3D title fared well at yesterday’s 28th annual D.I.C.E. Awards, leaving with the night’s biggest award and four others — Outstanding Achievement in Animation, Outstanding Technical Achievement, Family Game of the Year, and Outstanding Achievement in Game Design.

Yesterday’s awards ceremony only compounds hopeful sentiments shared by Sony CEO Totoki Hinkoi in Thursday’s earnings call. In the optimistic call, Hinoki cited the commercial and critical success of Astro Bot and Helldivers 2 as he outlined his plans for the brand’s future. “The fact that titles in genres we are aiming to expand in the future, including titles for families and live service games, have received these awards is a major stride toward our building a broader title portfolio.”

This Year’s Top Titles

Yesterday’s D.I.C.E. Awards ceremony (formerly the Interactive Achievement Awards) differs from The Game Awards, as the Geoff Keighley-led latter relies on fan and critic votes to select winners. The former, in contrast, is helmed by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, an industry body akin to the academy behind the Oscars.

As awards season progresses — the Game Developers Choice on March 19 and the BAFTA Games Awards on April 8 —  gamers and experts anticipate more of the same. If history is any indicator, Astro Bot and other top dog Balatro will win big.

Last year, Larian Studios’ Dungeons & Dragons RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, took awards season by storm.

‘Astro Bot’ Team Rolls Out New Content

Players can expect more stages to hit Astro Bot in the coming weeks; Team Asobi revealed new content will be accessible on February 20, February 27, March 6, and March 13.
