‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ Team Issues Heartfelt Statement Following Final Patch

'Baldur's Gate 3' characters Karlach and Lae'zel softly smile.

Not even the Gauntlet of Shar brought me to tears quite like this.

Belgian game developer and publisher Larian Studios posted a tear-jerker of a farewell following Tuesday’s long-awaited Patch 8 drop. While loyal fans of Faerun have had today’s date circled on their calendars for quite some time now, the team’s sentimental sendoff didn’t soften the blow.

“You’ve helped us make BG3 a bigger success than any of us could’ve ever hoped for,” Larian’s blog post reads, “and that passion could keep us tweaking things and making changes until the end of time. But then we’d never be able to create something new.”

“Outside of minor bug fixing, Patch 8 will be the last game patch to introduce new content,” Larian’s entry clarifies. “That means we won’t be adding any new narrative content or significant changes to storylines, Origin characters, or companions. We’ve told our stories the way we needed to tell them, and tried our best to make them impactful and engaging, and we’re continuing to get better at handling our own chaos so that we can continue to create more chaos in the future.”

Larian’s lengthy love letter to audiences detailed exciting game additions.

Players can now partake in PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation crossplay, snap quality shots using a new in-game photo mode, and tailor their Tavs using around a dozen new subclasses. Larian announced several gameplay fixes that seasoned players are sure to pick up on, like new cinematics as well as improvements to user interface (UI) and inventory organization. Additionally, those entrenched in multiplayer sessions via their Xbox Series S can utilize a new split-screen feature.

Starting today, Steam users can pick up some new Trading Cards they can use to craft neat new profile cosmetics.

Naturally, the team’s post also included some fan service for good measure. The post links users to Larian’s YouTube account, where they’ve uploaded a charming animated farewell from Spud Gun Studios. The game’s cast reprises their roles for the short-and-sweet clip.

Larian devs have been hard at work since the late 1990s, but the critical and commercial success of Dungeons & Dragons-based role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3 catapulted the little-known studio to new heights.

While the Baldur’s Gate 3 studio is officially bowing out of the D&D biz, they suggest some promising content ahead. If a fourth entry to the IP is in the cards, another team of creatives will carry the torch.

If you’ve not tried the award-winning tabletop-inspired title, today’s your day; Baldur’s Gate 3 is available at a discount via Steam.
