There’s nothing quite like multiplayer gaming. You can unwind with your best friends and play classic games.
Sometimes, things can get a little competitive, but that’s okay! Fighting for video game supremacy is part of the fun.
Not every multiplayer game is a battle royale; some of the best multiplayer games are all about cooperation and teamwork.
Here are our favorites; do you agree with our list? Let us know!
Marvel Rivals

The newest game on our list, Marvel Rivals has already established itself as an excellent multiplayer experience.
While Overwatch floundered with its poorly received sequel, NetEase was ready to pounce, delivering an accessible, recognizable, and fun team shooter.
Is it perfect? No, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s all about living out our wildest superhero fantasies.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any entry in the Mario Kart franchise, but we’re going with the most recent entry, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, on the back of its impressive lineup of characters and courses.
This is Mario Kart perfected for the Nintendo Switch, and its multiplayer scene continues to thrive even today, even though the game was a launch title for the Switch eight years ago.
Just don’t get too mad when you get blue shelled at the last second and drop from first place to eighth.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Like Mario Kart, you can’t go wrong with any entry in the Super Smash Bros. franchise. While some prefer the gameplay of Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube, I’m giving the nod here to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch.
The biggest reason? The impressive roster of playable characters. The best and brightest from Nintendo are all here, as are a surprising number of third-party characters. Finally, we can live out our dreams of Sora from Kingdom Hearts battling against Sonic the Hedgehog, Solid Snake, and Banjo-Kazooie.

Halo 3

Another tough choice for the iconic Xbox franchise, but I’m going with Halo 3 here.
Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 will always have a special place in my heart, but Halo 3 has the perfect mix of weapon balance, multiplayer maps, and gameplay speed.
There’s a reason why people, myself included, hope Microsoft can bring the Halo franchise back to its glory days. We stayed up all night playing Halo 3 in college, and I’d love to do it again as an almost 40-year-old adult.
Mario Party

My wife and I joke when we play Mario Party: Do we want to have fun, or is it time for a fight?
While the more modern Mario Party games from Nintendo offer accessibility with their gameplay, the original Mario Party for Nintendo 64 is downright ruthless. It’s a brutal, high-stakes board game experience that I will always cherish; that’s why it’s my favorite entry in the franchise.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

I don’t know if Fall Guys would have succeeded if COVID-19 had not forced us to stay inside, but I’m glad it did.
It’s an excellent balance of Battle Royale-style gameplay in an over-the-top platforming wonderland. It’s crazy, it doesn’t take itself seriously, yet it will punish the unsuspecting.
While Fall Guys isn’t nearly as popular today as it was when it was released, I will always remember “Fall Guys Fridays” with my friends.
Grand Theft Auto Online

The beauty of Grand Theft Auto Online is how well it presents its open world sandbox to players.
Rockstar has always been one of the best developers when it comes to open world gaming, but Grand Theft Auto Online takes things to another level. So many of the memorable moments occur naturally, thanks to its thriving community.
Rocket League

The best way to explain Rocket League to someone who has never played it is “controlled chaos.”
It’s a simple game of soccer with the added mayhem of controlling a rocket-powered car instead of, you know, soccer players. The result is a physics-based competitive gameplay that will drive you insane, but you can’t help but keep coming back for more.
It Takes Two

One of the best multiplayer co-op games of all time, It Takes Two is a masterclass in platforming gameplay.
Its co-op-focused gameplay is a delight from start to finish; the amount of teamwork required between you and your partner is impressive, and the solutions to its puzzles are incredibly imaginative as well.
Left 4 Dead

Call me crazy, but I prefer Valve’s original team-based zombie shooter to the original.
There was something magical about Left 4 Dead that worked so well, whether it was the co-op gameplay of surviving the zombie horde or the incredibly fun and well-balanced competitive multiplayer experience that let you control zombies against the human survivors.
Counter-Strike

Simply put, Counter-Strike is one of the best shooters of all time. Somehow, Valve succeeded with its sequels and spin-offs, which means you can’t just pick one version of the game. It’s like trying to choose your favorite child; you love them all.
Competitive team shooters owe it all to Counter-Strike. Its well-crafted gameplay, level design, and mission structure are timeless.
Jackbox Party Packs

One of the most reliable multiplayer games you can play today, the Jackbox Party Packs offer multiplayer goodness for the entire family.
Yes, that sounds cliche, but it’s true! From trivia, hidden identity and social deduction, word play, art-based games, and more, Jackbox is always a smash hit at parties or family gatherings. Of course it’s one of the best multiplayer games you can play today.
Overcooked 2

As someone who worked in a restaurant kitchen, I love the Overcooked franchise because it evokes a certain nostalgia.
Working as a line cook in a cooperative environment is stressful enough, but Overcooked loves to throw random obstacles your way that only make things even more chaotic. Yet it all works out so well; is it frustrating? Yes, but you don’t care because you’re a cat working with a crocodile in a kitchen on a pirate ship.
