The PlayStation 5 has enjoyed an incredible amount of success for Sony.
Since its release in 2020, it’s delivered several marquee gaming experiences that rank among the best of this console generation. Just last year, for example, it featured one of the best games of 2024 as a console exclusive.
Today, we look at some of the best PS5 games that have made the console a huge success.
Final Fantasy XVI

Fun fact: this game is the reason why I bought a PS5! The promise of a cinematic, action-oriented Final Fantasy game influenced by Game of Thrones was something I couldn’t miss out on.
That’s exactly what this game is about. The story may go off the rails about halfway through, but it certainly delivers on presentation and gameplay. Its boss battles are some of the most epic I’ve ever experienced in a game.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Despite everything that makes Final Fantasy XVI great, it’s outclassed by the second entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the experience we have been waiting for since Square Enix announced the upcoming remake of the beloved game. It’s an emotional, epic, open-world adventure that offers an incredible amount of content while barely scratching the surface of what makes Final Fantasy VII so great.
Best of all, the development team learned the right lessons from what people didn’t like about the new content in Final Fantasy VII Remake, delivering a far more grounded experience that blends in old and new content.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Speaking of epic, it’s something Insomniac Games has delivered twice in a row now with the Spider-Man games.
Their sequel proves that sometimes bigger is indeed better, raising the stakes and showcasing some of the most impressive gameplay I’ve ever seen in a video game.
It was a favorite to win Game of the Year in 2023, but it ran into an all-time great.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the type of game you can easily spend over 1,000 hours with before realizing you’ve barely scratched the surface.
One of the greatest RPGs ever made, its a narrative delight, with some of the best writing and voice acting ever seen in a game. Come for the brilliant digital Dungeons & Dragons experience, and stay for the characters you’ll fall in love with.
Astro Bot

From 2023’s Game of the Year to the best game of 2024. Astro Bot is a platforming paradise that, at first glance, is an excuse for Sony to celebrate the history of the PlayStation brand.
Once you dive in and experience the gameplay, you’ll find some of the best platforming outside of a Mario game to date. Astro Bot is a delight from beginning to end.
Astro’s Playroom

Before Astro Bot won our hearts, Astro’s Playroom was the sleeper hit of the PS5.
Not since Wii Sports has a tech demo been so thoroughly impressive. Seriously, this was meant to show off the capabilities of the DualSense controller, and it was free with every PS5 console, quickly becoming the most-played PS5 game during its initial release.
God of War: Ragnarök

Santa Monica Studios’ decision to reboot the God of War franchise was well worth it with the 2018 PlayStation 4 release.
The 2022 follow-up is even better, upping the ante not just in terms of size and scope but also depth. Yes, the same God of War action and intensity you know and love are still here, but they are complemented by another well-written, cinematic story that adds more depth and emotion to its characters.
The Last of Us Part I and II

I’m lumping the two PS5 ports of The Last of Us together because, in a way, their existence is a little silly. Neither of these games needed to be remastered for the PS5; they were already still accessible and a work of art on the PlayStation 4 hardware.
And yet, despite that, somehow, Naughty Dog ups the ante with the PS5 releases. I didn’t know these games could look better than they already did, but they do. This is the definitive way to play some of the best games of the modern era.
Demon’s Souls

The FromSoftware game that introduced the world to the developer and birthed the Soulslike genre is still a little rough around the edges, but it’s a wonderful trip down memory lane.
What makes Demon’s Souls such an enjoyable experience isn’t just the remastered visuals but the fact that we’re all better at these games than we were in 2009. Yes, it’s still a challenging experience, but we’re prepared this time, even if the game is still ready to crush our confidence.
Elden Ring

You can’t talk about FromSoftware without bringing up Elden Ring. It’s a testament to see just how far the developer has come after their humble beginnings while staying true to the formula that made them successful.
Yes, Elden Ring is a far, far bigger game than Demon’s Souls could ever dream of, but it’s also a natural gameplay evolution that still stays true to the developer’s roots. It was a long time coming for Elden Ring, but it was well worth the wait.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

There are a lot of next-gen games even today that don’t really feel “next-gen.” It’s been a major problem with this current console generation; why did we have to pay hundreds of dollars for new hardware when the experiences are, more or less, the same?
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of the few next-gen games that takes advantage of next-gen PlayStation hardware. Sony’s big marketing push with the PS5 was the power of its SSD. It’s something that’s taken advantage of almost immediately when you’re going through all the rifts and transporting between worlds. It’s such a cool experience that you can’t help but be impressed.
Returnal

Speaking of next-gen experiences, Returnal is a game that sadly flew under the radar. Its roguelike gameplay is a treat, albeit one that can be frustrating at times.
Once you get locked in, you can appreciate the game for everything it offers: tight gameplay, fantastic atmosphere, impressive videos, hypnotizing audio, and some of the best uses of the DualSense controller ever. There’s nothing quite like Returnal, and I can’t wait to see how developer Housemarque follows it up.
