Atomic Heart was a surprise hit after its release. A lot of fans drew comparisons to BioShock with a robotic twist. Just a week after announcing Atomic Heart had crossed the ten million player mark, Mundfish showed us what they had in store for us at Summer Games Fest. It did not disappoint. It was pumped full of action and familiar faces. Like its predecessor, Atomic Heart 2 is set in an alternate-history retrofuturistic universe. Atomic Heart 2 picks up with a world on the brink of collapse. It’s up to the player to prevent it; however, beware, as the truth runs deeper than anyone may realize.
The trailer dials up all the action. The gunplay looks significantly improved, and the new weapons shown look fun. Looks like the grappling hook from the last Atomic Heart DLC returned. It also looks like the world is a little more open. You’ll see several vehicles and mech-like contraptions you will be riding around in. Gliding around the world now seems an option, so it looks like more verticality has been added to the world.
The new character you play as seems to be running in a group with Sergey Nechaev, the main character from the first game. We will see if we hear his famous line, “Crispy Critters”. Running in a rebel squad to take down more robots looks more fun than ever. The action isn’t the only thing dialed up to ten. In the press release, Mundfish is also stressing the RPG side of the game. They mentioned player freedom and a strong narrative throughout the press kit. That wasn’t the only surprise.
The Cube was also announced at the Summer Games Fest. It is a new multiplayer RPG shooter set within the retrofuturistic world of Atomic Heart. The trailer showed a glimpse of the giant, levitating structure that will be the center of this story set in the Atomic Universe. The presenter on stage called an MMOFPS.
Several years after the events of Atomic Heart, the world stands on the brink of a new threat. A mysterious giant levitating structure known as The Cube has become the epicenter of increasingly dangerous phenomena, and in order to save humanity, players must plunge deep into its secrets—and survive. On the surface, it’s a geometrically perfect object, and in truth it’s an anomalous, shifting place swarming with vicious enemies. But most terrifying of all is the equation hidden at the Cube’s core. Deciphering the equation can save humanity; failing to do so means extinction.
