Just because a movie is critically acclaimed doesn’t make it universally beloved.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, including us. And we’re here to call out these highly rated movies. For a variety of reasons, they missed the mark in our eyes.
Just remember: this list is based on our opinion. You may disagree, and that’s okay!
Fargo

I love the Coen Brothers. No Country for Old Men is one of my favorite movies. Having said that, Fargo missed the mark for me.
I failed to find anything captivating in its story or characters. As someone who watched Fargo in a film studies class, I’m not afraid to admit that I was in the minority with my dislike of it.
The Nightmare Before Christmas

As a millennial, I’m fully aware of how popular this movie is with people my age. Some people make it their entire personality. I am not one of those people.
The movie feels cringey more than anything else. The Gothic themes and designs fail to speak to me, and honestly, they never have, so that’s probably why I’ve always hated this movie.
Citizen Kane

Speaking of being in the minority, let’s talk about Citizen Kane, shall we?
Yes, the ending was long spoiled through countless pop culture jokes, but even still, I couldn’t care less about the life of Charles Foster Kane.
It’s not an issue with Orson Welles, either. I love Touch of Evil! Citizen Kane just wasn’t it for me.

Avatar

James Cameron’s beloved film has the distinction of being the only time I’ve ever fallen asleep in the theater.
Yes, the comparisons to Dances With Wolves and Pocahontas have been done ad nauseam, but for me, it was an example of all style and no substance.
Grand Budapest Hotel

Admission time: I cannot get into Wes Anderson films.
I know they’re not for everyone, but Grand Budapest Hotel is so beloved that I wanted to give it a fair shot. No matter how many times I do, though, I get beyond bored and have to turn it off.
I even tried watching it on a plane, where I’d have nothing else to do, and still couldn’t sit through it.
Lincoln

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
I am convinced that the movie only got its flowers thanks to Daniel Day-Lewis.
Yes, he’s one of the best actors of all time, and his performance here is incredible, but that wasn’t enough for me to enjoy the movie. If I want to see a stronger performance from him, I’ll watch There Will Be Blood.
The English Patient

If there were a poster child for overrated movies, it would be The English Patient.
It’s too long, nothing happens, and then it has an emotional ending that doesn’t feel earned. I’ll never get those two and a half hours back.
Joker

Joker isn’t a bad movie, but it’s not the masterpiece many claim it to be.
The twist was merely okay, and I feel like its biggest moment was just shock value more than anything else.
Hey, it’s better than the second one, though!
The Blind Side

Sandra Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Blind Side.
While critical reviews were more mixed than those of other films on this list, it still generated enough positive buzz to appear during award season.
Not only is the movie pure Oscar bait, but its story has also come under fire, as Michael Oher, on whom the story is based, was taken advantage of by the Touhy family.
Wicked

They did not need to split Wicked into two parts. There isn’t enough source material available from the musical to not stretch it out beyond belief.
That didn’t matter, though, as people flocked to the theaters anyway. I still disagree that it’s worthy of major awards, though.
