Cyberpunk 2077 gets free PlayStation 5 Pro update

Polish game studio CD PROJEKT RED’s blockbuster RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, received a free PlayStation 5 Pro update on Wednesday, bringing enhanced visuals, advanced ray tracing, performance enhancements, and more to the home console. A pre-upgrade PlayStation Blog post from the label’s Global Art Director, Kuba Knapik, touches on the latest changes. “We wanted to make the most of the PS5 Pro’s cutting-edge technology by bringing 4K visuals, powered-up performance, advanced ray tracing, and more to the Cyberpunk 2077 experience,” Knapik writes. “The goal was to bring the very best out of both the hardware and our game to make Night City shine as brightly as possible. With Cyberpunk 2077 currently available in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, anyone who owns a PS5 Pro can experience this enhanced version of our action role-playing game and fight to become a cyberpunk legend.”

The 2.310.100 update, available for PS5 Pro players now, optimizes Night City performance and visuals using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR. “This tech goes through each pixel, one by one, and upscales it using advanced artificial intelligence,” Knapik explains in his PlayStation Blog post. “The result is incredible, with every inch of Night City — every thermal katana, every gonk on the street, every supercharged sports car — coming to life.”

As if Night City weren’t customizable enough, today’s Cyberpunk 2077 update also introduces three new graphics modes — Performance, Ray Tracing, and Ray Tracing Pro — allowing home console users to tailor gameplay in new, more technical ways.

For the most visually remarkable Cyberpunk 2077 experience, opt for Ray Tracing Pro. “Ray Tracing Pro enables all available ray tracing enhancements […] This includes ray-traced reflections, ambient occlusion, skylight, shadows, and emissive lighting, all active while Cyberpunk 2077 targets 40 frames per second on variable refresh rate-enabled displays or 30 frames per second otherwise.” Conversely, the new Performance Mode prioritizes “fast and fluid gameplay,” with high image fidelity and up to 90 FPS. Ray Tracing mode, which Knapik calls “the sweet spot,” is the most balanced of the three, marrying enhancements while maintaining 60 FPS.
