New ‘Dead by Daylight’ chapter tackles terrifying Thai folklore

Dead by Daylight is deviating from predominately Western horror icons to showcase a Thai folklore-inspired Killer. In a new press release, publisher and developer Behaviour Interactive teased what horror fans can soon expect.

In the game’s upcoming chapter, “Sinister Grace,” players control all-new Survivor Vee Boonyasak as they evade a grotesque disembodied head called The Krasue.

In addition to the chapter’s unsettling new entity, the story-inspired in-game music adds immersion, locking spooked players into a harrowing world of body horror they’ve likely never explored.

The chapter also treats gamers to six fresh character Perks that intensify their preferred playstyles, including the first Hex Perk since Dead by Daylight: Castlevania.

Thai Folk Horror

Dead by Daylight’s symmetrical multiplayer format has matched countless characters with horror mascots from many IPs. But this time, as gamers slowly wander into the sinister Fog, they’re diving right into the rich and haunting world of folk horror. While many cultures around the world have told their own super-scary stories for generations, The Krasue, taken from Thai folklore, might be among the subgenre’s most menacing.

In Thai tales, a Krasue appears before the unsuspecting as a floating head, and, much like a deadly siren, resembles an attractive young woman. Suspended in the air, a Krasue lugs its bloodied innards as it hunts to satisfy its hunger — and it’s not stopping ’til it’s satisfied.

In Dead by Daylight, former opera performer Burong Sukapat is our Krasue. The talented and beautiful singer was unmatched until, in a seedy exchange, she swapped her corporeal form for the fame she so desperately sought.

The character is already unsettling enough, but the added body horror elements kick it up a notch.

“When we set out to make this Chapter, we wanted to deliver something for the gore fans out there,” Dead by Daylight Creative Director Dave Richard states in the press release. “The Krasue’s transformation really leans into that, her body rips and peels open like a blister under pressure.”

“There’s a cool juxtaposition going on,” he says. “You have this opera singer with an incredibly beautiful voice and a graceful presence transforming into an unsettling creature straight out of a nightmare. Guts and organs hanging out, blood dripping all over. It doesn’t get better than this.”

Gameplay

This all-new chapter brings two new characters — one Survivor, one Killer — as well as each one’s own distinct, lore-inspired skills.

The Krasue

In the forthcoming chapter, gamers playing as The Krasue can toggle between body and hovering head, and each form brings its own unique capabilities with it. If you’re going with the Head, your powerful Intestinal Whip (yes, you heard me) will quickly humble your target. Naturally, the disembodied noggin moves faster without anything below the neck, so you’ll pick up some speed.

Going with the Body? The Krasue’s Leeching Gland allows players to launch an infectious projectile right at Survivors. The attack paralyzes opponents, and from there, the world’s your oyster.

Feeling froggy? Master both forms and their respective move sets to ensure you’ve got the upper hand no matter how the chips fall.

Vee Boonyasak

“Faulty amps, sweaty dives, broken-down vans… nothing makes you feel more alive.” Axekick drummer Vee Boonyasak is a streetwise artist who’s joining the ever-growing roster of musicians in the ominous Fog. Alongside Boonyasak’s upbeat disposition and kinetic energy are new music-inspired Perks.

“We love bringing musicians into The Fog,” says Richard. “At this point, we’re almost able to fill an entire band. Vee is extra special to me because I’m also a drummer, so it’s been fun telling her story and seeing the unique energy she brings to the Dead by Daylight universe.”
