Survival horror game Dead by Daylight has announced another crossover — this time, with zombie media franchise The Walking Dead. The collaboration is just one more pin in its crossover properties cap.
Dead by Daylight will incorporate content inspired by AMC’s successful TV show. Characters Rick and Michonne Grimes join as survivors. Additionally, Rick will receive a Daryl Dixon Ultimate Skin. All three characters will be voiced by their respective television series’ performers — Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, and Norman Reedus.
The reveal trailer included scenes from the show in the game’s engine, which (hopefully) means we’ll see a TV show-based map in the future. We also aren’t sure who (or what) the Killer will be.
While he may not be biting out a Killer’s jugular anytime soon, grizzled sheriff Rick Grimes’s willingness to do what’s necessary is second to none. There’s a reason he’s among Dead by Daylight’s most requested characters. Few manage to strike a balance between being intimidating, honorable, and vulnerable quite the same way.
Rick Grimes Gameplay
Grimes was a must-watch character in The Walking Dead, and now, you’re part of the action. Rick brings three new perks to the game with his arrival:
Apocalyptic Ingenuity draws on Rick’s experience scrounging for supplies in a world torn asunder. Rummage through Chests to gain a unique Ability that allows you to construct a Fragile Pallet from Broken Pallet remnants.
Come and Get Me! plays on Rick’s selfless courage, putting himself directly in harm’s way for the benefit of others. After unhooking a Survivor, gain a unique Ability that can trigger while crouched and idle. The move silences injured or dying teammates, staunching all Pools of Blood. At the same time, you’ll let out a diversionary scream and briefly reveal your Aura to the Killer, giving them a new target to chase — not that they’ll ever catch you, right?
Teamwork: Toughen Up is most effectively used alongside a teammate, so keep that in mind while equipping this one in your loadout. If a nearby Survivor stuns or blinds the Killer while you’re injured, your Grunts of Pain, Scratch Marks, and Pools of Blood will be reduced. Note that this perk will synergize quite effectively with one of Michonne’s Perks.
Michonne Gameplay
The in-game perks of our favorite katana wielder, Michonne, illustrate her conviction and her role as a protector:
Conviction is aptly named, revolving around Michonne’s willingness to push herself to the brink and back. Heal a Survivor to gain a life-saving Ability that instantly heals you from a Downed State (provided you’ve built up a decent chunk of recovery time). The catch? You’ll break and go back into the Dying State for a short time, but this invaluable window lets players heal up and turn the game around.
Last Stand comes into effect after spending time in the Killer’s Terror Radius. Fitting, considering Michonne was first introduced while travelling alongside a pair of pet Walkers. After some time, your next fast vault will stun the Killer, granting you a crucial moment to escape. You only get one, though; this perk disables for the remainder of the trial after one successful use.
Teamwork: Throw Down shares a name with one of Rick’s Perks, working quite effectively alongside it. When you pallet stun or blind the Killer, injured Survivors in your vicinity gain Endurance, briefly glimpsing the Killer’s Aura at the same time.
Like many horror franchises, Dead by Daylight is full of surprises. From crossovers with actor Nic Cage to Attack on Titan appearances, the multiplayer survival game has become the Fortnite of survival games. I’m actually surprised this one didn’t happen years ago. I just hope Rick is as good at repairing generators as he was at killing zombies.
