Dune: Awakening has finally arrived on Steam.
Those lucky enough to get their hands on the Deluxe or Ultimate Editions were able to hit the sand on June 5, but now, the servers are up and running for the rest of us. “During that time, Dune: Awakening saw 117,087 people play at peak concurrency on Steam, a number that is expected to soar even higher now that the floodgates are open and the pre-order phase is concluded,” developer and publisher Funcom said in their latest release.
Funcom first revealed its ambitious and striking sci-fi MMO in August 2022. Since the inaugural announcement, the game has been featured at events like PAX East and during presentations like Summer Game Fest.
At the time of writing, Dune: Awakening is holding steady at an 89% Steam user rating, its nearly 13,000 reviews averaging “Very Positive” overall.
PC gamers are having all the fun, it seems. Funcom confirmed the MMO will arrive on PlayStation and Xbox sometime next year, but offered no other related information.
Dune: Awakening offers sci-fi and open-world fans a colossal multiplayer survival game set in sandy, desolate Arrakis. Despite being based on Frank Herbert’s classic works and drawing inspiration from director Denis Villeneuve’s modern adaptations, our Lisan al Gaib (played by actor Timothee Chalamet in Villeneuve’s flicks) is nowhere to be found. Dune: Awakening occurs in a version of Arrakis where Paul Atreides never existed. The game instead features a war-torn Arrakis, divided by a persisting battle between House Atreides and House Harkonnen.
With the help of your new Bene Gesserit mentor, embark on your own journey using your customized player character to tackle treacherous terrain, slip past sinister sandworms, and ultimately develop your personal and political power.
All hype around the open-world adventure aside, the best news is probably the price tag. The Standard Edition of Dune: Awakening is available on Steam for just $49.99, a relatively modest asking price amid inflated game and peripheral prices. For those hoping to go all-in, the game’s Steam listing shows available upgrades and DLC.
