After nearly two decades, U.S. video game company Electronic Arts revealed that college basketball is returning to its release rotation.
In a post shared to X (formerly Twitter), the official EA Sports account told followers, “Bring the Madness. Let’s run it back. #CBB #ItsInTheGame.” The update featured a close-up of a basketball emblazoned with the EA Sports logo. The post, shared at 11:10 a.m. — less than an hour ago — has already been viewed more than 2 million times.
Additionally, a new Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) memo obtained by Extra Points’ Matt Brown reveals the CLC put feelers out regarding a new “standalone, comprehensive (men’s and women’s teams) college basketball video game in November 2024.” The memo, dated June 26, 2025, confirms formal interest from several companies as well as a potential release date sometime in 2028.
Electronic Arts first entered the paint in the late 1990s with NCAA March Madness 98 released on the first-gen Sony PlayStation. After the series’ launch, EA released new installments annually, though the company discontinued its basketball offerings after releasing NCAA Basketball 10 in November 2009.
While EA’s post reveals little, the first hashtag hints that the upcoming entry will be released as EA Sports College Basketball, a name in line with its recently revitalized College Football IP. The latter shared a similar lifespan, first releasing in 1993 as Bill Walsh College Football and concluding in 2013.
The American game studio similarly shared plans to revive the football franchise in 2021, utilizing an equally short-but-sweet social media post. The success of EA Sports College Football‘s return likely contributed to the brand’s plans to bring basketball back.
