Let’s-a-go! On Wednesday, Nintendo released the first look at its upcoming sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The brand-new 7-minute Nintendo Direct presentation, led by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, teased behind-the-scenes information with Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri before diving into the trailer. “At this moment, our team of artists at Illumination are just weeks away from completing animation,” Meledandri shared. “Their work is stunning, and we can’t wait to share it all with you.”

In addition to streaming the short showcase on its YouTube channel, Nintendo utilized its Nintendo Today! smart device application to share the trailer. The brand continues to leverage the smartphone calendar companion app to share breaking brand news, including cast announcements for the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. Most recently, the app was used to share Nintendo Pictures’ first animated short, “Close to You,” a tear-jerking two-parter featuring Pikmin.

Nintendo confirmed the original cast will return for the sequel in a previous Direct. Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt will reprise his role as the titular plumber, and Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) is back as Luigi. Additionally, The Menu‘s Anya Taylor-Joy will return to play Princess Peach, while Key & Peele star Keegan-Michael Key is returning as Toad.

This time around, the brand introduced two new stars set to lend their voices to beloved franchise characters. The new film will welcome Bowser Jr. and Rosalina, played by Uncut Gems director Benny Safdie and Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson, respectively.

“Working side-by-side with Nintendo, we are bringing an incredible range of characters to the big screen, many for the first time,” Meledandri said, “from iconic favorites to deep cuts that longtime fans will recognize.”

Surprise Appearance

Right before the new cast reveal, however, Meledandri was interrupted by one familiar face from the first film: veteran actor Jack Black, who voices iconic franchise villain Bowser. “Whoa, whoa, Chris-san! If anyone’s gonna be announcing Bowser Jr., it’s gotta be his Papa.”
