Fans’ First Look at ‘The Boys’ Star Karl Urban in Upcoming ‘Mortal Kombat 2’

Karl Urban Mortal Kombat 2

A sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat will hit theaters this fall, and the franchise creator finally gave fans their long-awaited first look. In a new post on X (formerly Twitter), the fighting game franchise’s figurehead Ed Boon shared a fake movie poster featuring Karl Urban (The BoysThe Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) as Jean-Claude Van Damme-inspired Kombatant Johnny Cage. The poster positions Urban’s smirking Kage in the foreground, donning sleek sunglasses and crossing his arms. Behind him, motorcycles flying from a colossal, cartoonish explosion.

The first flick follows down-on-his-luck MMA fighter Cole Young (Tan) as he joins the universe’s mightiest fighters in the supernatural, high-stakes battle between Earthrealm and Outworld. The plot for the sequel remains unknown, leaving fans turning to Boon’s X profile for any sneak peeks, leaks, or looks. Several actors will reprise their roles from the first release — Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, Jessica McNamee’s Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks’ Jax, among others — as Urban and other newcomers ready themselves for Kombat. Other new faces include Adeline Rudolph’s Kitana, Tati Gabrielle’s Jade, and Damon Herriman’s Quan Chi.

COVID-19 social distancing measures stifled the cinematic release of the first film. But Warner Bros.’ decision to simultaneously stream new releases on Max (formerly HBO Max) propelled Mortal Kombat to viewership in a then-record 3.8 million households.

The franchise, introduced to the world in the early 1990s, is no stranger to renewals, reintroductions, or remakes; several live-action and animated adaptations comprise its filmography. Though some past entries were critically panned, the recent surge in well-made, true-to-their-source video game adaptations raises gamers’ collective hopes and expectations.
