The few Final Fantasy fans who weren’t already restless can go ahead and start now.

Word regarding a potential Final Fantasy IX remake has been swirling for some time, exacerbated by past leaks (looking at you, NVIDIA). However, Square Enix’s new website honoring the JRPG‘s 25th anniversary reveals “a variety of projects” are in the works. The website is in Japanese, but once translated, the first blurb reads:

“FINAL FANTASY IX, which was released on July 7, 2000, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025. We are preparing various projects, including merchandise and collaborations to commemorate the 25th anniversary, so please look forward to it!”

While this vague statement isn’t an announcement by any stretch of the imagination, the serendipitous timing, promise of goodies to come, and all-around brand fanfare raise eyebrows.

This week is shaping up to be an eventful one for gamers worldwide. Nintendo’s upcoming Direct, scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, has had fans counting down the days since the brand first told fans to save the date. Nintendo Direct presentations garner countless views, and the hype around this one might make it prime real estate to announce an upcoming Final Fantasy IX remake.

For fans taking rumors with a grain of salt, Square Enix’s website also offers exclusive merchandise, including books, plushes, vinyls, and more. The celebratory site also reveals a “FINAL FANTASY IX 252th Anniversary Commemorative Lottery,” which “will be released in July 2025! Details will be announced at a later date, so please look forward to it.”

Square Enix has also tapped eyeglasses distributor Zoff for Final Fantasy-inspired frames. The translated announcement reads:

“The first collaboration has been realized to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the classic RPG ‘FINAL FANTASY IX’ ! To commemorate the 25th anniversary, we have created a collaboration pair of glasses with popular characters. All three types come with a limited edition glasses cloth and case! We also plan to set up fitting corners and sell original capsule toys at some stores. For the latest information, please follow the official Zoff X account.”
