Sales for Square Enix‘s Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles have officially surpassed 1 million units in just three months. The Japanese developer-publisher announced the milestone in a special post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “Kicking off the new year with huge thanks to everyone who has played Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles! Get it now on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.” Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Square Enix’s remake of its 1997 RPG Final Fantasy Tactics, launched on all major platforms on September 30, 2025.
The Ivalice Chronicles isn’t a brand-new game, but the remaster still nabbed spots on countless “Best Games of 2025” write-ups. The improved graphics, rich character builds, quality-of-life improvements, better battle mechanics, new accessibility settings (“Squire mode”), and voiced dialogue make The Ivalice Chronicles approachable for a new generation of gamers and a worthwhile revisit for longtime players.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles director ‘underestimated’ sales

The remake’s performance surprised Final Fantasy Tactics creator and The Ivalice Chronicles creator Yasumi Matsuno. In response to a post on X referencing the remake’s new milestone, Matsuno admitted he “underestimated the sales figures by too much” before closing with three laughing emojis. Square Enix’s expectations remain infamously high, likely contributing to the staff’s optimistic yet realistic outlooks.
In a press release translated by Gematsu, game producer Kazutoyo Maehiro said, “The entire development is incredibly grateful to you all, and we are taking this positive reception as motivation to continue considering future updates to make the game even more enjoyable and accessible to an even wider audience.”
Players ultimately hope The Ivalice Chronicles‘ sales and reception push studio directors toward the tactical RPG niche, and based on some team members’ recent statements, fans shouldn’t abandon their hopes just yet. In a September 2025 interview with Game Developer, Maehiro suggested that the remake’s performance, if satisfactory, could pave the way for similar remasters.
In an interview with Wired last September, Maehiro explained that while fans want features introduced in Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, he “cannot make any promises.” He did say, however, that the team may explore additional content pending The Ivalice Chronicles‘ performance. “If [The Ivalice Chronicles] were to become a success, I do feel that that would then lead to discussions around potentially bringing out sequels, for example, or newer tactical RPGs.”
