Nike’s tech-influenced .SWOOSH division (pronounced “dot-swoosh”) is breaking barriers — and barrels — with their upcoming Donkey Kong-inspired sneaker release. The Air Max 1 “Big Head Origins,” set to hit shelves this spring, employs design choices like varied textures and DK’s familiar color palette that’s sure to resonate with trendy gamers everywhere.
The global footwear brand’s gaming-inspired “Low Poly” first hit shelves last fall. The shoe series draws its nostalgic aesthetic qualities from video games of yore, incorporating a pixelated Nike “swoosh” and numerous hidden low-res Easter eggs. Ahead of the project, Nike’s geeky new footwear project tapped a “player two” of sorts, incorporating top content creator and streamer Kai Cenat into new advertisements.
The Kong-inspired sneaker’s muted cream-colored mesh base, shaggy dark brown suede, banana yellow sole, and charming 16-bit details hidden throughout are sure to excite sneakerheads and old-school Nintendo fans. The geometric “swoosh” is reminiscent of the blocky, low-polygonal graphics seen in myriad retro titles, the vivid red pulled right off DK’s iconic necktie. All in all, I’m hard-pressed to find a more fitting footwear choice for the famous ape, but I’m not so sure DK is a shoe guy…
Though some passionate sneaker collectors are sure to keep their geeky new pair away from the elements, Nike’s Air Max still contains its signature air unit in the heel. Optics aside, a good sneaker is best used when monkeying around; don’t be afraid to take it off the shelf. I can’t, however, vouch for how they’ll hold up in your next mine cart ride.
Sneaker Drop Details

Set your alarms and update your calendars — the .SWOOSH x Nike Air Max 1 “Big Head Origins” release is coming to select retailers this spring. But if past releases are any indicator, high demand for the sneaker will make getting a pair more difficult than Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Early estimates suggest the shoe will sell for around $150, though resellers will likely swing over to third-party retailers and sell for much more.
Like your bananas, keep your eyes peeled. Eager sneaker buyers should stay plugged in and check Nike’s .SWOOSH website frequently for updates and info.
