Next year marks the first Gears‘ 20th birthday, and it looks like Xbox is starting party prep early.

On Monday, Xbox announced that beloved early aughts shooter Gears of War would (finally!) get a facelift.

In a new Xbox Wire release, The Coalition Studio Head Mike Crump says that the “faithfully remastered” Gears of War: Reloaded will arrive this summer.

Gears of War: Reloaded, developed by The Coalition and in partnership with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief, launches August 26, 2025, and will retail for $39.99.

Admittedly, a cool $40 is a far cry from what I expected following Xbox’s recent price hike announcement.

The news release says the upcoming remaster is “natively optimized for more platforms than ever before,” with a day-one drop on Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. Additionally, the game will hit Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5, and Steam. One step further, Gears of War: Reloaded supports cross-play and cross-progression for all platforms.

The Xbox Wire details some of what fans can anticipate as the release date approaches:

Gears of War: Reloaded includes the full breadth of content from the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, delivering the most complete version of the original game to date. Players will gain immediate access to all post-launch downloadable content at no additional cost — this includes the bonus Campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, and a full roster of classic characters and cosmetics unlockable through progression.”

Alongside confirmed Cloud Gaming and Play Anywhere capabilities for Xbox loyalists, the release says gamers who already own the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will receive a free upgrade. However, fans must have acquired their copy of Ultimate before the remaster announcement (around noon ET on May 5, 2025). Eligible gamers will receive a download code via direct message to their eligible Xbox account.

In its release, Xbox promises premier performance for modern consoles and rigs, saying, “No matter where you play, Gears of War: Reloaded has been re-engineered to look and feel incredible.” The brand says players can expect 4K resolution, 60 FPS in Campaign, 120 FPS in Multiplayer, as well as:

  • High Dynamic Range (HDR)
  • Dolby Vision & 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos
  • 7.1.4 3D Spatial Audio
  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
  • 4K assets and remastered textures
  • Enhanced post-processing visual effects
  • Improved shadows and reflections
  • Super resolution with improved anti-aliasing
  • Zero loading screens during Campaign
