On Friday, Rockstar Games announced it is delaying the release of the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI until May 2026.
In a new post on X (formerly Twitter), Rockstar confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI will now drop on May 26, 2026, extending its previously revealed Fall 2025 date by several months.
Confirmation comes after news of Borderlands 4’s bumped-up release, which led many to speculate the studio was trying to work around GTA VI.
Rockstar Games posted an official announcement on their website:
”Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026.
We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
The news of Grand Theft Auto VI‘s delay will alter the course of the gaming landscape for 2025. With Rockstar now making it official that we won’t have a new GTA game releasing this year, expect other studios to start locking down and confirming release dates for their most anticipated games this year.
