Hollow Knight: Silksong studio Team Cherry released a nearly 2-minute-long trailer just over one week ago, a hype-heavy reveal video that closed with the long-awaited sequel’s launch date of September 4 — just three days away.
The full video announcement quashed most byproducts of the rumor mill; once fans had a concrete arrival date to anticipate, however, their collective focus quickly shifted to the sequel’s potential sticker price. As AAA teams continue to release $70-$80 titles that’ve slowly lifted expenditure expectations to a “new normal,” already budget-conscious players were hoping for a more approachable price.
In a new Bluesky post shared on Sunday, August 31, Team Cherry cleared up any possible misconceptions. “Four days until release! Hollow Knight: Silksong will be available on 4th September,” the post begins. For gamers in the United States, the Hollow Knight follow-up will cost $19.99. After dropping a modest $20, players can hop in beginning at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET.
The first game in the sidescrolling Metroidvania series, Hollow Knight, was first released in 2017 and quickly achieved cult status. Players follow Hornet, a one-time royal from the now-fallen kingdom of Hallownest, as she explores a striking 2D world, engages in heart-thumping fights using aerodynamic attacks, solves tricky puzzles, and unlocks unique abilities and access to otherwise hidden nooks and crannies. The game’s chill-inducing soundtrack intensifies every second of gameplay.
According to Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, Hollow Knight has sold 15 million copies since its release nearly a decade ago. This figure lands the Team Cherry project among the best-selling independent video game titles in the medium’s history. The game is also the most-wishlisted download on Valve-owned digital game distributor Steam.
Additional data from Steam metrics aggregator SteamDB says Silksong boasts more than 412,000 followers — a 25,000% increase in just the last week.
