‘Hollow Knight: Silksong’ is coming — well, kind of

 | Outrun Gaming

Hollow Knight fans’ wishes were finally granted Thursday. However, the magical reveal came with a “monkey’s paw”-like caveat.

Gaming and entertainment media outlet IGN announced the long-awaited game will be playable in September 2025, but only at an Australian museum.

The game will be part of Australia’s National Museum of Screen Culture’s (ACMI) interactive “Game Worlds” exhibit, showcasing exceptional artistry and design in the video game industry.

ACMI’s website details what fans can expect when visiting their new exhibit:

Game Worlds is the major new playable exhibition premiering this September.

Game Worlds transports you inside the levels of 30 unforgettable videogames, from global blockbusters like World of Warcraft (Blizzard Entertainment) to pioneer of the life simulation genre The Sims (Electronic Arts) and Neopets (World of Neopia), and a highly anticipated Australian title for 2025.

Play some of the world’s favourite games in ways you’ve never been able to before, with exclusive custom builds. Explore original design materials, concept art and iconic objects from across genres, including indie gems and Triple-A masterpieces.

Told through the lens of iconic videogames, Game Worlds charts technical and design innovation to uncover what makes these virtual worlds feel alive. It celebrates the communities, and friendships that flourish within these digital landscapes. Game Worlds shows how games evolve through player interaction and the unique creative partnership between designers and players.

The upcoming Metroidvania from Australian indie developers at Team Cherry has amassed a cult-like following, one that’s been eagerly waiting in the wings since the release of its predecessor, Hollow Knight, in 2017.

Even with interest from some very vocal players around the world, the studio hasn’t announced whether the game will be playable beyond its launch at ACMI in Melbourne on September 18.

Restless Hollow Knight fans have long speculated about the game’s release, and this reveal leaves some wondering whether the franchise follow-up will hit Steam upon (or ahead of) its ACMI release.
