You’ve heard about it in myths, but it’s finally here.
Team Cherry, the game studio behind the long-awaited sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong, is teasing what it’s calling a “special announcement.”
According to the official Team Cherry YouTube account, the Silksong news will drop on Thursday, August 21, 2025, around 7:30 a.m. PT/10:30 a.m. ET.
With the game slated for a playable appearance at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany — a massive games expo that kicks off on Wednesday, August 20 — fans are crossing their fingers harder than ever, hoping for a tentative launch date. Other than, say, Grand Theft Auto VI, few games have been subject to such intense speculation from the rumor mill as Silksong. The sequel’s predecessor, Hollow Knight, was released in early 2017 to universal acclaim. In the years since, the Metroidvania has developed an intensely loyal cult following that’s grown increasingly restless as they wait for more.
While we’ve got nothing to go on right now but an announcement about an announcement, fans of the franchise will tell you it’s worth noting. Until recently, fans seldom heard about a potential Hollow Knight follow-up, save for the initial reveal in 2019 and intermittent updates from Team Cherry.
Ultimately, it was Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct presentation earlier this year that added fuel to the fire. After a brief clip of Silksong was included in the brand’s stream and the studio distributed still images, fans locked in. The game’s subreddit is abuzz, with some users even sharing personal recordings from Nintendo’s Gamescom booth.
Mark your calendar ahead of the studio’s “special announcement,” slated for premiere in less than two days.
