Microsoft patents in-game advertisement system for PC, XBOX

Advertisements have long appeared on XBOX dashboards, but parent company Microsoft has patented an in-game ad system that implements them in a new, comparatively invasive way.

Microsoft Technology Licensing’s newly published patent (via Respawn First), titled “Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access,” reveals the potential for an “ad-credit” system that utilizes what it perceives to be natural pauses to push advertisements on both PC and console gamers.

The application was filed on April 23, 2026, under publication number US 2026/0260258 A1.

“A content management system may obtain a promoted content trigger event from an interactive software application based at least partially on content of the interactive software application,” reads the patent abstract.

“A content management system may obtain promoted audiovisual content. A content management system may present the promoted audiovisual content to the user. A content management system may commence the user’s interaction with the interactive software application. A content management system may establish a credit based at least partially on the promoted audiovisual content, wherein the credit delays suspension of the user’s interaction with the interactive software application during a credit duration.”

According to Microsoft’s patent, the system will use in-game pauses like loading and menu screens to display ads. Player input will be suspended during these ads, but the patent promises patient viewers will receive a “credit” for ad-free playtime, ranging from just 15 minutes to one hour or more.

These uninterrupted playtime segments are, in the patent, “defined at least partially by progression or events in game, such as five rounds of gameplay, completing one level, completing three online multiplayer matches, defeating an NPC, or completing a project or task.”

While there’s no way to predict whether this particular patent will take off, Microsoft has been working to incorporate ad-viewing into XBOX for quite some time.

Over the summer, the brand began testing ad-supported game streaming on XBOX systems over the summer, although XBOX Insiders can opt to play “one-hour game streaming sessions for free, supported by advertisements.”

Microsoft isn’t the first tech company to finagle ads into negative space, either. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) applied for a similarly overreaching ad patent in 2009. The patent, “System for converting television commercials into interactive networked video games,” presents ways the brand could better engage “passive watchers” with interactive adverts.

One of the patent’s notably outlandish illustrations has since become a meme. The image depicts a now-engaged consumer standing up from their sofa, arms outstretched to the sky. The large television in front of the viewer shows one hamburger.

The TV encourages the audience: “Say ‘McDonald’s’ to end commercial.” The viewer shouts, “MCDONALD’S!” to bypass the ad and return to regularly scheduled programming.
