If you’ve never tried your hand at urban planning, now’s the time.

Mini Motorways, the cult traffic management sim from Dinosaur Polo Club, has officially launched its long-awaited Creative Mode. The New Zealand-based studio announced the game’s new mode in a press release:

“Become an asphalt artist and completely redesign the Mini Motorways maps you know and love, changing building placements, colors, and destinations! Bring your vision of an ideal city to life with ultimate creative control to reroute, recolor, and rebuild cities to accommodate each city’s denizens however you see fit. Craft creative cul-de-sacs, master the flow of traffic, and pave the way to a better world.

“Creative Mode joins the pre-existing Classic, Endless, and Expert Modes to provide four established gameplay experiences for mini motorists of all kinds. Change the palette of your neighborhoods, reposition houses, and tunnel through the heart of the mountains themselves to bring about a more efficient way of living, where citygoers benefit from your creative choices. Transform a bustling metropolis into a spacious grid of roadways that pays respect to nature’s rippling rivers and towering trees, or concoct a concrete jungle and lay convenient roadwork over every inch of unpaved, open spaces.”

Mini Motorways first cruised onto the scene in 2019 as an Apple Arcade exclusive. The satisfying city sim hit PCs in July 2021 and Nintendo Switch handhelds in May 2022. Motorways is a follow-up to the studio’s rail transit-centered predecessor, Mini Metro, which was first released in 2015.

While the game’s been around the block a few times — Motorways celebrated its sixth birthday just one week ago — the habit-forming puzzler is still a part of many players’ rotations. According to its Steam listing, Mini Motorways boasts an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating thanks to nearly 15,000 players’ favorable reviews.

Dinosaur Polo Club community manager Casey Lusas-Quaid affectionately acknowledged fans’ content requests in the press release. “We know our players are stoked for this one,” Lusas-Quaid said. “As Mini Motorways grows and matures, we’re happy to be able to give players a much-requested creative gameplay experience. Our community helped get us to where we are now, and we can’t wait to see what you whip up with these new tools.”

Dinosaur Polo Club shared a formal announcement trailer on its YouTube account. “The cities of the world are your playground,” the video’s blurb reads. “Get to know your favourite Mini Motorways maps all over again: swap colours, delete buildings, and design a city where everything is just where you want it. Build with architectural precision or chaotic creative abandon–in Creative Mode, your imagination takes the driver’s seat.”

I’ve got 100 hours in Mini Motorways. Some folks reach for a Sudoku when it’s time to wind down for the day, others turn on Netflix or open TikTok to “doomscroll.” Motorways is my go-to. The game’s satisfying scoring, ambient audio, low-key gameplay, and competitive time-sensitive Challenges keep Mini Motorways fresh, but the introduction of an all-new game mode is sure to excite its seasoned players just as much as the newbies.
