Fans’ First Look at T-1000 in ‘Mortal Kombat 1’

Fans of the popular fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat finally get a peek at new gameplay. On Tuesday, Mortal Kombat 1 developer Netherrealm dropped a full trailer for two upcoming character arrivals: T-1000 of Terminator 2: Judgment Day fame and Kameo Fighter Madam Bo.

While superfans know the latter, the promise of popular culture icon T-1000 appeals to even the uninitiated. T-1000 actor Robert Patrick lends his voice as well as his likeness to the character, amplifying nostalgia for Gen Xers everywhere. Netherrealm even goes a step further, mirroring the mannerisms and attack style used by Patrick in the 1991 sci-fi action flick. Rest assured, the character’s gruesome Fatality features unmissable Terminator 2 references.

In the graphic joint trailer, T-1000 and Madam Bo show off their exclusive moves. T-1000 transcends states of matter, becoming “liquid metal” and shapeshifting into different Kombatants. The fighter uses this morphing ability to slide past opponents and generate weaponry at his fingertips. Speaking of fingertips, the character can even generate a third extremity to spear opponents while using his existing limbs to restrain them.

NetherRealm expanded on T-1000’s abilities, including an Animality, in an official release:

Battling for the supremacy of machines, the T-1000 is a state-of-the-art infiltration Terminator designed by artificial general superintelligence system Skynet. Comprised of mimetic polyalloy (a.k.a. liquid metal), the virtually indestructible advanced prototype can shapeshift into objects or people it comes in contact with, mimicking their appearance, behavior, and voice, making it an extremely difficult opponent to detect and defeat. With its superior intelligence and metamorphic capabilities, the T-1000 is an efficient fighter that embodies the ultimate evolution of assassination technology.

The T-1000’s sophisticated moveset is on full display in the new trailer, including the ability to organically form stabbing weapons, such as spears and hooks, and liquify for high-tech maneuvering and concealment. The video also reveals a new Fatality for the T-1000 and teases the character’s Animality, the brutal finishing move that morphs the machine into a K-9 German Shepherd to annihilate defeated opponents. The fan favorite Animalities are available now as a content update for all Mortal Kombat 1 owners at no additional cost.

Madam Bo’s abilities aren’t anything to sneeze at, either. The chainsmoking martial artist (and mother of Kombatant Sektor) uses her slipper to slap her opponents silly.

Bo and T-1000 come to Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns owners on March 18 at no additional cost. Players without the expansion can buy the Kombatants on March 18. Fans with the Khaos Reigns Expansion can kickstart Kombat with T-1000 on March 18. Gamers without the expansion’s early access can purchase the Kombatant on March 25.

Gamers with the Khaos Reigns expansion will welcome T-1000 and Madam Bo to Mortal Kombat 1 on March 18. Don’t have it? Don’t worry — gamers without the expansion can buy each fighter starting March 25. You and your friends’ multiplayer plans won’t be compromised.

Check out the trailer below, but be warned: it’s pretty gnarly.
