14 Movies Publicly Trashed By Their Stars

Don't Worry Darling

It’s normal for celebrities to do press tours while they market their movies.

Most of the time, they’ll sing their film’s praises. It makes sense; their goal is to get us to come to the theater and see their new movie.

However, there are times when stars aren’t afraid to publicly trash their movies. It’s always a refreshing change of pace and nice to see, so let’s reminisce about the times Hollywood’s brightest stars talked badly about their movies.

Michelle Pfeiffer – Grease 2

Grease is an iconic American musical with catchy songs and plenty of glitz and glamor.

The sequel, however, is anything but. Thankfully, star Michele Pfeiffer agrees. “I hated that film with a vengeance and could not believe how bad it was,” she said in 2007.

Halle Berry – Catwoman

Catwoman is infamous for being nominated for seven Golden Raspberry Awards, including winning Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Actress.

Halle Berry took the “award” in stride, even throwing the movie under the bus during her acceptance speech. “Thank you for putting me in a god awful movie,” she joked. “It was just what my career needed. I was at the top, and Catwoman plummeted me to the bottom.”

Robert Pattinson – Twilight

Pattison made a name for himself starring as Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise, but he’s done an excellent job since then, showcasing his talents across a wide range of roles.

He’s never been shy about disliking the movies and the Edward character in particular, once comparing him to an axe murderer.

Bill Murray – Garfield

Garfield’s big screen debut in 2004 stars Bill Murray as the titular character and features a script by Joel Cohen.

For the record, Joel Cohen is not related to the Coen Brothers. Murray claims he only took the script because he mistook the writer’s name.

George Clooney – Batman & Robin

Following the success of the Tim Burton Batman movies, the Joel Schumacher films left behind the gothic feel and fully embraced the comic book camp. Unfortunately, it didn’t always work out, and one actor is sorry about that.

“I always apologize for Batman & Robin,” George Clooney said on The Graham Norton Show. “Let me just say that I’d actually thought I’d destroyed the franchise until somebody else brought it back years later and changed it.”

Ben Affleck – Armageddon

Affleck’s commentary during Armageddon is some of the best commentary I’ve ever heard in my life.

He spends a solid two minutes questioning the logic of NASA’s inability to build a good transmission for an oil driller.

Sylvester Stallone – Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot

It doesn’t take a NASA rocket scientist to know that Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot is a bad movie. Sly agrees, calling it “one of the worst films in the entire solar system, including alien productions we’ve never seen.”

He said that the film was supposed to be similar to the Billy Crystal and Danny DeVito comedy Throw Mama From The Train, but clearly, that wasn’t the case.

Burt Reynolds – Boogie Nights

Sometimes, an actor doesn’t get a movie. That’s okay, they’re not for everyone.

That’s the case with Burt Reynolds, who starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights. He told Conan O’Brien that he thought Anderson was “young and full of himself,” with Reynolds wanting to hit the director.

Bob Hoskins – Super Mario Bros.

I’d wager that everyone knew how bad the original Super Mario Bros. movie was upon release, but Bob Hoskins wasn’t afraid to spit the truth during an interview.

When asked about his worst job, he immediately answered, “Super Mario Bros.” He gave the same answer when asked about his biggest disappointment and what he’d change about his past.

Charlie Sheen – Men At Work

When Sheen hosted Saturday Night Live in 2001, he jokingly refunded an upset audience member after seeing the movie.

“Like I said, I’m not proud of my past,” he said.

Michael Caine – Jaws: The Revenge

I’ll let this Michael Caine quote speak for itself because it’s absolutely legendary:

“I have never seen the film, but by all accounts it was terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.”

Florence Pugh – Don’t Worry Darling

Perhaps the winner for most awkward press tour belongs to Don’t Worry Darling.

Despite starring in the movie, Pugh did everything she could to distance herself from it. The same is true for Chris Pine; you could see the light die in his eyes whenever he was asked about it.

Sean Connery – The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Sadly, this was Connery’s final live action performance. It wasn’t the way the legendary actor should have gone out.

He wasn’t afraid to trash it, though. When asked where the film’s director was during its red carpet premiere, Connery told the reporter that they should “check the local asylum.”

Shia LeBeouf – Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I have to give LeBouf props for this one, as he said what we were all thinking.

In a 2010 interview with the Los Angeles Times, LeBeouf said the fourth Indiana Jones film ruined the iconic franchise’s legacy. Harrison Ford wasn’t happy with the movie either, but he expressed his displeasure in a more tasteful manner.
