On Tuesday, global games powerhouse Nintendo officially announced its first Splatoon spinoff.
The franchise-tangential entry, Splatoon Raiders, will be available exclusively on the brand’s new Switch 2 hardware.
The all-new trailer, posted to the Nintendo of America YouTube account, gives fans a brief look at their new role as a mechanic. Players will navigate the mysterious Spirhalite Islands alongside the Deep Cut trio.
Our first look at Splatoon Raiders is a short one; the announcement is just over a minute long, but the remainder of the five-minute upload gives fans of the third-person shooter more to appreciate.
After highlighting the upcoming spinoff, Nintendo’s upload reveals a free update for Splatoon 3 is coming to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on June 12.
The update features the Splatlands collection, comprising all-new weapons from the Barazushi and Emberz brands. Based on previous weapons, the 30 new additions — yes, 30 — have fresh looks with different sub and special weapons. Additionally, Wii U Splatoon stage “Urchin Underpass” is returning to the stage rotation.
Nintendo also announced it will raise all weapon Freshness, allowing players to earn new in-game Badges. A new stat will also be added for Anarchy Battle, called “Series Weapon Power,” which will track players’ effectiveness per weapon based on their win/loss ratio in battles. These players will then match with similarly skilled players, permitting players to try new weapons to their heart’s content without being disadvantaged.
Closing out their announcement, Nintendo says Switch 2 users will find smoother and improved visuals throughout in-game locales. Today’s trailer also confirmed Splatoon 3 players will be able to play together across both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
