The last five years have been tumultuous for gaming, with many global brands announcing extensive layoffs, studio closures, and project cancellations. One brand’s latest employee retention figures, however, seem to defy industry odds.

According to global gaming powerhouse Nintendo’s latest employee data, which utilizes data gathered between April 2024 and March 2025, employee turnover at its headquarters in Japan is just 1.9%. The figures, first shared by Nintendo Everything, also show the brand’s employee retention rates in the States aren’t far off; Nintendo of America turnover rates are a slightly higher 5.7%. Rates in Europe and Australia are 6% and 16.7%, respectively.

Even more impressive than Nintendo’s retention, however, are its employee tenure figures. The average Nintendo employee in Japan stays with the brand for an average of 14.4 years. While the brand’s worker tenure is highest in Japan, employee retention is impressive elsewhere, too. Nintendo of Europe team members dedicate about 11.1 years to the company, while North American employees average a decade. Meanwhile, Nintendo Australia employees average around 8.5 years.

Across the board, however, male employees tend to stay for slightly longer than female employees.

Nintendo employee records also reveal the colossal brand has just 5,630 full-time employees worldwide. According to GI.biz, Nintendo reported $4.9 billion in gross profit for the last fiscal year ending March 31, 2025 — around $870,337 per employee. Comparatively, Sony reported more than 12,000 employees within its gaming division during the same time frame; its $2.8 billion in reported profit equal $231,404 per team member.

Past employee figures show Nintendo added 366 team members to its global full-timer roster this year, growing from 5,264 to 5,630. Nintendo of America grew by 165 full-time employees, Nintendo Japan added 148, and Nintendo Europe welcomed 56. Conversely, Nintendo Australia is down three employees.

Nintendo Japan boasts the largest team at 2,962 full-time employees. Nintendo America takes No. 2 with 1,446 staff members, while Europe and Australia follow with 1,123 and 99 workers, respectively.

Juxtaposed with other AAA studios’ extensive cuts, cancellations, and closures, Nintendo’s global figures show that modern employees still practice job loyalty — given the right conditions, that is.
