Nintendo reveals new ‘Super Mario Party Jamboree’ rules, items

We’re now just six days away from the launch of Nintendo’s new Switch 2 console, and the brand is starting celebrations early.

An official announcement from the Japanese video game company details new content to come for Super Mario Party Jamboree, all exclusive to the Switch successor.

The reveal cites seven new additions: Mario Party + CameraPlay; New Mario Party mode rules; Bowser Live; Carnival Coaster; more minigames; and GameShare. The latter allows two independent console owners to “share compatible games … even if they don’t have it.”

Thankfully, Nintendo says fans who already have a copy of Super Mario Party Jamboree for the first console needn’t snag another, but they confirm players must obtain the game-specific Upgrade Pack to access the new content. Nintendo’s website says the Jamboree Upgrade Pack, which will run fans another $19.99, allows fans to play existing titles adapted for the latest hardware.

“If you already have the original Nintendo Switch game—as either a physical or digital version—you can upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition by purchasing the game’s upgrade pack from Nintendo eShop, My Nintendo Store, or retailers. After you upgrade, the original Nintendo Switch game can still be played on Nintendo Switch, though the features and content of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition can only be played on Nintendo Switch 2.”

If you’ve raised your eyebrows over paywalled backwards compatibility, you’re not the only one.

Despite loyal and vocal brand fans’ excitement, some gamers are boycotting the release on principle, citing ultra-high prices, unsavory business practices, and prioritization of profit over players.

Nintendo’s website outlines the contents of the Super Mario Party Jamboree Upgrade Pack, with two of six features requiring the USB-C camera, an additional console-exclusive peripheral priced at $40.

To use the GameChat camera going forward, however, fans will need to fork over even more; the subscription-based Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use GameChat despite already shelling out for the otherwise-unusable hardware.

With less than one week to go, only time will tell whether modern consumers’ aversion to unchecked capitalism will rain on Nintendo’s parade. Check out the full trailer for Super Mario Party Jamboree Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on YouTube.
