On Friday, Nintendo announced it will resume pre-orders for its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 in the United States. The console’s widely anticipated release has been complicated by the Trump administration’s expansive and expensive “reciprocal” tariffs.
While gamers globally prepare their wallets, President Trump’s chaotic trade war has prevented players in the U.S. from reserving hardware. With most of the world’s electronic devices manufactured in Asia, Trump’s recently imposed 145% tariff rate on China unsurprisingly spiked sticker prices. President Trump’s rate on goods from Vietnam fell to 10% from a previously announced 46%.
“We apologize for the retail pre-order delay, and hope this reduces some of the uncertainty our consumers may be experiencing,” said Nintendo in their latest release. “We thank our customers for their patience, and we share their excitement to experience Nintendo Switch 2 starting June 5, 2025.”
According to Nintendo, players can place pre-orders starting April 24, 2025. The brand confirmed the console’s previously announced price will remain unchanged, but explained costs may fluctuate in the future.
Nintendo’s Switch 2 will retail for $449.99, the same price announced on April 2, while the Mario Kart World bundle remains at its original price of $499.99. The company’s latest news release doesn’t deny the potential for future price hikes, using the phrase “at launch” to qualify statements regarding costs.
Believe it or not, the brand led with the “good news” first. The bad news? Nintendo Switch 2 peripherals “will experience price adjustments from those announced on April 2 due to changes in market conditions,” the brand says. “Other adjustments to the price of any Nintendo product are also possible in the future depending on market conditions.”
Retail prices for Nintendo’s Switch Pro Controller and other accessories have increased, with the latter now priced at $85, up from $80. Even prices for cables and the Joy-Con 2 shifted upward.
