Nintendo to sell 13m Switch 2 consoles in 2025, experts predict

Mario, Luigi, and Peach greet patient fans at Nintendo Switch 2 launch event in NYC

Just a few short days after the colossal launch of Nintendo’s Switch 2, market research brand Ampere Analysis predicts even more consumer hype ahead.

The market research company expects more than 13 million gamers worldwide to secure their console by the end of 2025, according to their latest news release.

Ampere Analysis also estimates Nintendo will move more than 51 million Switch 2 consoles by 2027, and more than 104 million by 2030.

Comparatively, the original Switch system hit around 120 million units sold in a similar time frame, though sweeping COVID-19 pandemic lockdown protocols positively influenced its success.

Despite global interest in the Switch successor, suboptimal sales for other hardware, like existing Xbox and PlayStation consoles, offset the new arrival’s marketwide impact. Grand Theft Auto VI‘s May 2026 launch, however, will likely fuel additional consumer interest before brands launch next-gen hardware in 2027. As other home console brands prepare for their own next-gen reveals, Nintendo’s market share will hit nearly 50% by 2027.

According to Ampere Analysis, widespread interest in the Nintendo Switch product family will fuel an “active user base of almost 130m … The combined 130m+ active consoles should last 2-3 years, peaking in 2028.”

What’s more, Ampere Analysis lists the console’s third-party content promotion among its most promising features. “The Switch 2 will play a crucial role in driving incremental sales for third-party publishers. The console’s more powerful hardware offers a new multi-platform sales channel, and additional games will keep users engaged with the Nintendo ecosystem. A cross-section of third-party special editions, ports of existing games, exclusives and multi-platform releases have been announced for Switch 2.”

Some special third-party launches for the console offer content not available elsewhere — for the time being, at least. Sega brought its Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio-developed Yakuza franchise to a Nintendo console for the second time in history — the first with Yakuza Kiwami in October 2024 — with Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut. Beyond some cosmetic enhancements, the story-rich 10-year-old action RPG now has Switch 2-exclusive multiplayer capabilities and never-before-seen cutscenes.

Third-party support from Nintendo is also expected to positively influence in-game spending, Ampere Analysis’ release says. “Third-party support will be the main driver of spend on in-game monetisation, the biggest untapped opportunity on Nintendo platforms … In-game monetisation is expected to represent over 20% of Nintendo console software earnings by 2028, up from less than 10% in 2024. Even moderately more in-game monetisation for Switch 2 could represent $1bn-2bn additional annual spending a few years into the cycle of Nintendo’s new console.”
