Hey! Listen!
On Friday, global entertainment enterprise Nintendo revealed the release date of its upcoming The Legend of Zelda live-action flick.
The brand leveraged its new Nintendo Today! app to announce the action-adventure movie from co-producers Nintendo and Sony will be released on March 26, 2027 — just over two years from today.
Nintendo Today! is a calendar-like application that uses widgets and notifications to connect brand fans with relevant ’round-the-clock news. The app has only been live for about 24 hours and is already being used for massive brand announcements, a strategy sure to lure more gamers to the app.
Besides today’s in-app announcement and abstract confirmation of its existence in November 2023, little is known about the project.
In 2023, Nintendo confirmed the project’s legitimacy, naming Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. as co-financiers who will distribute the film globally.
While gamers have more than two years of thumb-twiddling to do, they can rest assured that the project is in good hands. The iconic series’ creator, renowned developer Shigeru Miyamoto, is producing the movie alongside Marvel Studios founder and producer Avi Arad. Arad has also worked on other video game-inspired films, including Uncharted and Borderlands. The producer’s silver-screen adaptation of the iconic stealth game Metal Gear Solid is also in pre-production.
Jurassic World‘s Derek Connolly is writing, and Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is directing. Ball is also credited as a producer alongside Joe Hartwick Jr., under the duo’s Oddball Entertainment brand.
With Nintendo’s hands-on approach and the recent commercial success of video game adaptations — MAX’s The Last of Us, Amazon’s Fallout, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog, Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie — gamers can hold out for a flick that’s respectful of the IP. The latter, released in 2023, quickly became one of the most commercially successful movies ever, raking in a colossal $1.36 billion during its time in theaters.
With a release date all but set in stone, fans can hopefully anticipate plot and cast details soon. They might have to download Nintendo Today! to make sure they’re the first to know.
