Nintendo’s Switch 2 isn’t the only tech price hike on the horizon.
A translated Digitimes report reveals that global tech titan NVIDIA’s supply chain has “encountered multiple crises” as Trump administration-issued export restrictions from China continue to rock the industry.
Following the brand’s reported $5.5 billion dip in quarterly earnings and bans on chips to China, NVIDIA announced it will offset tariff-related costs with hikes on gaming graphics cards upward of 5-10%. Additionally, prices for server GPUs will rise 10-15%.
Experts continue to lament the Trump administration’s indiscriminate tariffs, as they are expected to inflate prices on consumer electronics, peripherals, and other assorted tech. Alongside higher manufacturing costs and consumer prices, export restrictions will likely influence availability. Much like the hand sanitizer and toilet tissue shortages of 2020, some experts fear consumers’ worry-driven tech buys will further impinge on an already-strained industry.
Recent reports show stateside ports are welcoming fewer and fewer arrivals, with some experts saying shipment shortages mirror those seen during COVID-19 lockdowns.
Tech giants NVIDIA and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) both announced this year that they would invest in the United States, with the former pledging $100 million. However, the planned investments won’t have a speedy impact on stateside production or prices.
A new agreement between the United States and China made on Monday may mitigate tariff-imposed costs and complications. Still, it’s unclear when — or if — stateside ports can expect an influx of shipments in the coming days.
